Need Tune Recommendations

Need your recommendations. I have ordered my Troyer Performance XCAL2 and need to tell them what tunes I want. So far I have selected a 93 octane Performance tune, a 93 octane tow tune and need your recommendaitons for a third. I was considering an 87 octane performance tune incase gas prices get to crazy or I could not find 93 in the area. What are your thoughts.

Thanks

I think you've picked the right tunes, go with 87 perf for just the reasons you said..

Depends on what intake u got, u might want to have an 87 tow tune. If u have the 3.5 Airforce One, you couldn't return to stock to tow for areas that don't have the 93 gas. You would probably SOL if you need to tow and can't get the 93 gas. Now if u don't have the 3.5 AF then 87 PERF is a good option. This is just my opinion.

HI Quick1,

This is really easy, and it should be decided by how much towing you do, IMHO - if you do a LOT of towing, then I would suggest that you make the other tune 87 octane towing-compatible.

Also, remember that just about no matter where you are, you will ALWAYS be able to get some kind of premium gas, even if it's "only" 91 octane - and we can easily set up youru premium gas towing tune so that it cna work fine on either 91 or 93 octane, and get teh normal power on either level of octane in the same tune - that is somethig we can do in the 2004 & newer F-150's very well, and to a slightly lesser extent, the 1999 & newer F-150's too. So do not be alarmed by others saying that you mihgt end up some place where you cannot get 93 octane, as we all pretty well know where that is, and you will virtually always be able to get premium gas - the only places you can't are basically extremely rare mom & pop type statins well off teh beaten path. 91 octane premiums only happens roughly west of about Texas, generally speaking, along with some areas in Oklahoma & Kansas - Also, some areas of Alaska have only 90 octane for premium fuels. The only other exception are in a very few extremely high altitude areas (like 8,500 ft+ elevations, and evne then that is rare), where the demand for octane naturally is less, so they have lower octane premium fuels - again, that works fine with our premium gas towing tunes, and we can alway set up a premium gas towing tune that will allow you to run it on anything from 90-93 octane if need be.

Anyway, I do think that if you tow a LOT, then it's a good idea to have both a premium gas tune and an 87 octane tune that are both towing compatible, and then whatever octane for your performance tune.

Now if you do NOT tow frequently, then I suggest making your 87 octane tune (and I am a firm believer that at least one of your tunes should be for 87 octane so that you can get better performance, fuel mileage, et.c, even on 87 octane gas) be a performance type of tune.

So what it really gets down to is how much towing you do - how often you tow. For those who tow a lot and travel to Western areas of the US, then I think it's a good idea to have both a premium gas and a regular gas tune for towing - and then have whatever level of octane tune you prefer for your performance tune.

The single most common combination of 3 different tunes for our customers is 87 octane performance, premium gas towing-compatible, and then premium gas performance.

Now one other important thing to remember is this - though the tuner can hold a maximum of 3 different custom tunes at one time, we can always do more *additional* tunes for a small fee and you can store them on your hard drive, and always overwrite 1 or more of your tunes on the tuner if you want to use a different tune - and you can do that an unlimited number of times!! We have some customers who have 7, 8 or more different tunes stored on their hard drive, and simply overwrite the other tunes on their tuner whenever they want to use different tunes, over and over again - since they have all of their tunes stored on their hard drive (we can export them in a format that allows you to do this), they are never limited, and can have tunes for every conceivable scenario - some have towing tunes for every level of octane, and also have performance tunes for every level of octane, just for example.

Now most of our customers don't need to do that, but there are some who do that as they like having lots of additional tunes for any kind of scenario and love having that kind of flexibility - so that is a fun thing you can also do if you feel the need for more than 3 different custom tunes.

I hope this helps you a bit, and if you'd like to go over any of this in more detail, please don't hesitate to cal us at our number listed below & we can go over all of this with you, OK?

Thanks for your post!
