After Superchips Install

after 1715 install on my 03 5.4 auto, I left everything "superchips" - no custom tuning, except tire and gear size changes. The 3-4 shift is not right. The truck shifts 1-2 fine, 2-3 fine, then it hangs in 3rd for a few seconds before shifting, then goes to 4th for less than 1 second, then to the low-geared 4th (overdrive?). Other than this, I love the tuner, but what the **** is going on?

Hi - Not sure if you have looked or not yet, but have a look at this post - it discusses a 'tweak' to the shift points that may help you ... it sounds counter-intuitive at first but it actually works ...

Good luck.

thanks for the reply and the thread, but I've read it, and tried what he says to do there, and I still have the same problem. I switched the 2-3 up 2 marks, and noticed this problem, then switched everything back to superchips and it's still doing it. You think I should go back to the 2-3 change?

Hi.

Since everyone's truck is slightly different, as an experiment, try going only +1 notch. If it's still the same, try one or two notches the other way (-1 or -2 from the superchips setting).

Be patient and I'm sure you will find a setting that will feel right. I'm assuming it shifts fine stock & there's no underlying problem....

If it persists no matter what you do, try giving Superchips Tech support a call & see what they say. Have your PCM code handy just in case...

Just so you know, 4th is overdrive - what you are likely feeling is the torque converter lock/unlock behaviour, which is driven by load. Feels like a gear change, but isn't. Actually you want it to lockup as soon as possible if the load permits; keeps the tranny cooler.

Good luck!

Cheers
Bubba

Oh ok. So what I should have said at the beginning of this thread is that my truck shifts great stock, but with the chip, the trans goes from 3rd almost immediatly to locked torque converter. Any known way to fix this with the tuner? Thanks, keep up the info, I'm always glad to get awesome info and input on this site.

masoball, basically it shifts into 4th gear then immedietly the converter goes to full lock-up correct? How much gas are you giving it when it does this?If you are barely touching the gas it prob will do what you are describing.Does it do the same if you have your foot into the gas?Is it doing it to the point that your truck actually bogs down?

Ya, just when I give it a small amount of gas. When I'm pushing through gears getting to 50 or 60 mph to go up a hill or on the freeway it doesn't go directly into lockup, just shifts normal until regular lockup point.

Ok after driving for a few days, I now see that if I'm in the middle-to-high rpms in 3rd when approaching 44 mph, it will quickly go from 4th to lockup. After reading enough about the torque converter lockup, I know 44 mph is where it's supposed to happen. So if I give a little more acceleration and keep it steady, I'll pass up that 44mph mark in 3rd, and not get to 4th or lockup til a little later. All is good, and all thanks to you all and this site! Thanks everyone for your past present and future posts and replies!

masonball...I have an 03 5.4L with exact same issue and found this while searching for an answer. Good info, but did you ever change the 3-4 shift points??? I'm currently running the 1715 93 octane tow-performance tune. I haven't modified the stock SCT program...yet.

I found that the sc tuner caused a horrible rough idle in my truck. I also found that it was the "old version" of the 1715 with only one tune - performance. So I uninstalled it and went back to 87 gas and everything is better than it was even before I installed the tuner. Anyone want to buy a 1715? My truck just runs better without it.

I bought it from the classifieds on this site. I know they're great tuners but it just didn't work well with my truck. I think the price for getting it upgraded would be the same price as getting a new one. Ya, I ran 91. Not saying it's not a good product or that mine doesn't work, just doesn't work well with my truck.

Ya, I wasn't aware of the old version either. It actually lists on the box "1997-2002 Models". I have an '03. Anyway, the pickup was awesome, and I'll reinstall it if and when I fix my idle. If I can sell it I will, and if I do I'll get an edge 2100 or the Troyer xcal. Three tunes MUST be better than one.
