Superchip

I have bought a superchip setup for my 1997 4.6. The transmisson shifts like a sports car, really nice. My question is how to set the shift points and the rev increments. Is there anyone who has experience doing this and what do they recommend for a stock truck with only a superchip, with an exhaust system soon to come.

the one for my 05 prompted me to use their recommended shift points. I did that on mine and it works well.

Hi.

Advice straight from the top... this is a 1715 we are discussing, right?

Then just use it until you are ready to get into something more appropriate.

Thanks to MGDFan for his post.

I would add that the first thing that needs to be known is just exactly *which* product does Ford974.6 own, as that dictates whether they should change anything at all or not.

I am assuming that what this gentleman has is the Superchips # 1715 hand-held Max Micro Tuner - and in that case, what MGDFan quoted is exactly correct for all 197-2003 V8 F-150's - just bump the 2-3 shift point up by 2 "notches," or "hash marks" if you prefer to call it that they way they are displayed on the 1715's screen, and that will give you th optimal results.

What that adjustment does is to actually cause the transmission to get back up into Overdrive quicker when you have had a "load event" - meaning, let's say you were going up a hill and it had to downshift into either 3rd gear (1 down from Overdrive, as Overdrive is 4th gear), or if it actually had to go all the way back down into 2nd gear. Making this adjustment is actually a nice driveability trick on that unit that helps it get back up into 4th gear quicker on part-throttle when the transmission has had to downshift out of Overdrive (4th gear) for whatever reason - that is why we say to do it., and it works nicely.

Now yes, I know that doesn't seem to make much sense, adjusting the 2-3 shift point to make a change in the 3-4 behaviour on part-throttle - but we have found that this works very nicely over the years in all 1997-2003 V8's.
Actually, a fellow F-150 Online member found that years ago, then we tested it as have *many* other 1997-2003 owners, and it works very nicely.

So we recommend making that one adjustment when using the 1715, and then leave everything else having to do with shift points completely alone.

Have fun!

Thankyou for the information, and I will assume that the adjustment will add a slight performance.

You're very welcome!

What that adjustment will do is just as I described above in that post - help it get back up into Overdrive quicker after the truck has had to downshift.

Now you do also make a good point, in that depending on where it's shifitng now @ WOT and what the other mods to the vehicle are, you may also notice that it accelerates a little bit quicker because that will make the WOT 2-3 upshift point a little bit higher as well - so you may notice that, too.
