Edge Setting for Octane?

All,

I know the Troyer deal expired yesterday, so I have a few questions on the Edge for a 2006 5.4L.

Is there a custom setting for the Octane on Level 2 and 3? In other words, can you tell it you want level 2 performance with 93 octane or level 3 performance with 87 octane? If not, what is the recommended octane for the two levels of performance?

Thanks,

KR-Texas

Yes, level 2 comes programmed for 87 but you can run higher octane by bumping up the timing. You add +1 timing for every 2 octane. So if you are running 93 octane and level 2, you would bump timing +3. But why not run the level 3 that is for 91 octane and bump the timing +1. That is what I do

Hey, I bet Mike Troyer would let you in if you called and cried real hard.

Bluejay,

I have been lurking around since the beginning of October and I have watched all of the threads on the Edge/Troyer debate. While I agree he can do a better job with a custom tune, I am not sure either of them of them are really worth the money.

I was happy with the SuperChips tuner on my F250 diesel for several years, but with the turbo I was able to get an 80-100 HP increase for about $250. I was towing a 15,000lb fifth wheel and climbing up the mountains in Virginia was a lot easier after I added the tuner, 4" Magna Flow exhaust and a big K&N intake. Plus, it was kind of fun to light up the 33" tires on big 4X4 truck...

If I decide to make a change on this daily driver truck, is it really worth the $335 for the Edge for only 25-35 more HP? Troyer does not claim any more HP, so $380 is even more money for the same small amount of gain. I understand the reasons for the power gain differences between a N/A gas engine and a turbo charged diesel are well documented, but 4x more money per HP gain is quite large and possibly not worth it in my book.

I will probably do something before I take my next trip to Florida, but an over the counter solution will be good enough for my situation. It seems everyone on here likes the Edge or Troyer, so I will keep asking questions about the Edge and hopefully, helpful guys like you will keep answering them.

Thanks,

KR-Texas

I got the Edge for some of the same reasons you mentioned. I do not need all out performance but I had a flat spot in my stock tune from about 2000 rpm to 3500 rpm. The truck just would not accelerate very hard. Also, it was erratic in its downshift when I needed to pass. The Edge has all those gauge possibilities I like to monitor, is cheaper, and did what I needed. I have throughly enjoyed it. Plus, that extra 25 or so hp does make a big difference in responsivness. Oh, and the shifting is much better. I have always preferred a firm to hard shift. I used to put a shift kit in the Mustangs I had. They would scratch rubber with just a medium throttle shift.

I too had some experience with Edge's diesel product as a guy I work with had an Excursion with the Edge, and he could boil the tires in that thing. Suprised a lot of kids that thought their car was fast. He now has a 2006 F150 with the 5.4 and the first thing he did was order an Edge. When I saw his, I had to have it. I can't imagine not having it. I have to get an inspection this month and it will require going back to stock for about a week, and I dread it. If you enjoy a snappy response from your vehicle, you will love the Edge.

Why do you have to go back to stock for a week? You could just tune it to stock, drive it down to get inspected and drive it home and tune it back how you like it. Heck, you could tune it in the parking lot before you leave the shop after you get your inspection done.

Now that I think about it, I had my truck inspected a few months ago (I live in the dfw area also) and left the 1714 program in it and it passed w/ no problems at all. I did just recently switch to the EDGE and it is by far a superior tuner than the 1714.

GB150,

Why do you thins the Edge is superior? The Superchips tuner is also on my list because I used their tuner on my diesel, but I have not heard anyone mention the 1714 on this site. I would be glad to hear what you thought about it and how come you like the Edge better.

Thanks,

KR-Texas

The 1714 is better than the stock tuning. Not much better but slightly better, IMO. The throttle is much more responsive with the EDGE. With the 1714 tuning installed, if I was driving on the freeway and wanted to speed up the truck would ALWAYS down shift. Even if I was only slightly trying to speed up to keep up w/ traffic. Now w/ the EDGE it actually feels like 4th gear (or OD) has some power and it doesn't downshift w/ the slightest increase in throttle. With the EDGE tuning, when starting from a stop, the truck moves as soon as I press on the gas pedal. With the 1714 tuning the truck would kinda just ease into acceleration. With the EDGE the acceleration is "right now". It just feels like the truck has more power in every gear w/ the EDGE. I am enjoying the EDGE so much more than the 1714. I used the 1714 for about 2 years, give or take a month. And the gauges on the EDGE are nice too.

As I understand it, you need several driving cycles to reset everthing and for the computer to adjust to your driving style. I just want to make sure I do not fail. I plan on filling up with 87, going back to stock, then getting the inspection after about 5 days of driving. Then filling back up with 93 and going back to level 3. Maybe I am making it too complicated, just wanted to make sure I pass, since it will be at the dealer.

Jim what inspection are you talking about? If its the normal yearly Texas state inspection then you don't need to return to stock. We do them every day and hell all they do is check the lights and horn etc and slap on the sticker. Do you have emissions testing up there or something?

I think he's from Burleson. The only inspection over there is making sure the gun rack is straight in the back window and the "Git R Done" sticker hasn't faded.

Yes, we are close to Dallas/Fort Worth and are in their "air control" area. So we have to have the full emmissions check. They stick some monitor device in the tail pipe and get a computer reading. If you fail, you have a certain period of time to get it fixed and then try again. It all goes into a central system.
