4.6 programmer advice
Recently bought a 2001 SuperCrew with the 4.6. Has anyone had experience with any of the programmers designed for this smaller V8, and was the improvement in horsepower/torque noticeable? Thanks.
I have an 05 Screw with the 4.6. It started out as a complete dog. Tied on Mike's tuning and a few other mods to the truck and its a whole new truck. You can't go wrong with Troyer Performance. Call Mike up and ask for details about the XCal2 with his custom tuning. Pricing can't be discussed on the boards, but he'll cut you a deal for being a member of F150online.com. His number is (540) 862.9515.
Hi.
On my last truck, Y2K F150 XLT 4x4 with a 4.6,
I added An AF1 & an Xcal2, and underdrives from Troyer Performance.
I added my own custom efans and a 3" Maggie SISO catback ad a Maggie Y-pipe.
On the 92 perf tune the truck ran terrific - and most of the improvement was directly attributable to the tuning. Definitely noticable. Also shifted like a dream.
Please note that in a pre-2004 platform, best gains are realized using premium gas tuning - escpecially on the smaller v8.
Hope this helps.
cheers
Bubba

Thanks for the replies. After doing some searching, it seems Troyer gets pretty good ratings here.
Has anyone seen feedback on Hypertech's programmer? I see that they claim to be getting almost the same increases in power whether you're using reg 87 octane or 92 octane. Since I put between 18-20K miles a year on my vehicles, every cent is valuable.

Hi CRSupercrew,
Actually, we gain more power on any level of octane than Hypertech or any other off-the-shelf type of device does, because we tune in a lot more depth, and we specialize in these vehicles, where they don't. Companies like Hypertech are concerned with making hundreds, if not thousands of different applications in order to maximize their revenues - they don't specialize in these trucks like we do, so they don't put anywhere near the time into these vehicles that we do - nobody does, as it's not very lucrative. But that is what we do, specialize in F-series performance.
We make more power than they do on any level of octane, but then we have specialized in these trucks for 15 years, so that is to be expected.
It's basic marketing, trying to make people think they can get champagne results on a beer budget - well, it's very simple - we get very nice gains on 87 octane, and even higher gains on higher octane fuels, just as it should be.
This is just some quick FYI, for whatever it's worth to you - and best of luck whatever you decide!
