which tuner

I have a 06 f350 with the 5.4 and auto trans. I want to get a tuner, i have had tuners before but i need to know one thing. I dont really wanna spend the money on the premium gas. i would like to be able to stiffen up my shift points and set my tire size. What is my best option? I have installed a cat back duals w/o muffler and will be installing a K&N filter. Suggestions are very welcome.

Thanks in advance

There are several options for you out there in Tuner-Land that can fit your bill. The two most prevalent ones at the moment are the Edge tuner and getting a custom tune specifically for your truck.

Both have their place and fit a niche in the market (off the shelf versus custom) and will yield nice gains as there's lots of untapped potential within your motor.

If it were my money, and it's not, I'd definitely go with a custom tune. We have a supporting vendor here at f150online.com that is SECOND TO NONE when it comes to customer support, a quality product, and, most importantly do me, specializes in the F-Series platform -- which is something that no one else really does. (yes, there are oodles of tuners out there that can tune a Ford truck but, for my money, I think I'll stick with the one that bases a large portion of his business on one platform and go with that knowledge and experience -- again though, that's my Senior Member & Moderator opinion there).

By going the custom route with your motor, you can set yourself up for a few things... my suggestion would be to talk to the folks at Troyer Performance about your options to see what they may suggest. Their staff is second to none (I've met each one of them personally) and *know* that motor inside and out. If premium fuel is your crux, mention that to them and explain your concerns -- I assure you that they'll get you in the tunes that will suit your driving habit, your driving style, and meet your wants out of a tune.

Give them a yell Troyer Performance.com

Hi firedude,

You've been here a while now, reading plenty of posts, etc., so by now you know what most people here do & so I think you have a pretty good idea of what most people prefer - and that is going with someone who specializes in these vehicles.

We provide you with a set of 3 different custom tunes, set up however is most appropriate for each individual vehicle owner's needs - that is what really gets you what you want, as well as the most flexibility, and the best results in terms of raw power and performance that is safe & sustainable, as we have specialized in the F-series platform for over 14 years. But you know all that, as you've been here a good while & have read many posts here over these past months.

One thing about those SuperDuty 5.4's is that they cannot even go open loop from the factory, and fixing that alone yields nice power gains on 87 octane - so you can have an 87 octane tune that adds nice power via our in-depth custom tuning. Those SuperDuty V8's are a bit tricky to tune properly, they have issues that no other platform with the exact same engine has, so it really takes someone who knows that specific platform well to get the best possible results, in a safe & sustainable performance tune.

The best bet is to just give us a call at our number listed below when you get a chance, and we'll be happy to go over all the details with you, let you know what can be done, discuss how you use your vehicle, what you are looking for, etc., and come up with our recommendation for how to tune your truck, so that you can make your decision from a fully informed position.

I know it can sometimes be tough to make your decision, especially when you have something a bit different - and SuperDuty's with V8 engine instead of the V10 or PSD is a bit of a rare bird, so it's definitely something a bit different, and requires someone who knows them well to do a good job on their tuning & in other areas of performance enhancements, so I understand that making that decision can take some time until you get comfortable with it. If there is anything we can do to help, answer any questions, etc., please do feel free to call us, OK?

Thanks for your post - best of luck with your truck and with whatever you decide!

Give Troyer a call... I just loaded my 87 Performance tune on my 2003 F250 6.8L and I gotta tell you, it's sweeeeeettttt. It really did make a difference.
The throttle response is right there, the shift points are nice and crisp, and when I press on the gas, this beast of the truck gets up and moves!
One other suggestion... please consider a different air filter. K&N is great for racing, but not for daily drivers. They do improve airflow, but they also let in a lot more dust... I still have the stock air intake, but if I were to switch, I would be to the AF1.
