It's about time.......
The weather finally broke today up here in Michigan. Got up to almost 60.
Soooooo I pulled the big F-250 into the garage and proceeded to start replacing all the pieces and parts needed to install my tunes from Troyer in my X-cal2. (which Iv'e had now for about a month) Started with the plugs. Replaced with Autolite dbl platinum gapped .05 less than stock. (as per Mike) Also antisiezed the threads and squirted some dielectric grease into the plug boots. Then came the injectors. 19's out, 24's in. Stock Mass air sensor was replaced with a 90mm lightning unit and had to add a inlet air temp sensor to the K&N inlet tube. Last thing in the engine compartment....A new Gatorback belt. OK.....topside done....now out comes the creeper and we go under to change the O2 sensors and the fuel filter. Now It's time to reread the paperwork from Troyer and SCT so I don't screw up the tune download. Disconect the compass/outside temp/auto dim rearview mirror, pull the fuel pump fuse, turn off the stereo, turn off the heater, and buckle the seatbelt. Now I'm as nervous as a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs. OK plug and play..........5 mins. later and I am now tuned. Test drive time. Wow what a difference.......... All I can say is why did I wait so long. (Cause it was friggin cold thats why) Thanks Mike for all the help on the phone when ordering.:bows: I'm going out to look for some HEMI's:devil: |
man this has been a mild winter, admit it you were lazy.
we need more adjectives in the difference between before and after |
Lazy?......No!
Working 13 hrs a day to make sure all the new Fords have fuel pumps.....Yes. How about....... I cant belive this is my truck. It idles better and smoother. Throttle response is much improved. Shift points and firmness are superior to stock calibrations. It just feels like it's gained another 100 cubic inches. Jeffro |
Great post OVRS
I drove through Michigan today, nice state. ENJOY Norm |
you dont have to replace all those parts for the xcal2 do you? i have the o2 sensors waiting to go in.

At Mike Troyer's suggestion........because of the mods I already had installed,
it was thought that I would be running on the edge of what the stock components could deliver at a WOT run. Also since my ECM was initally set up as a closed loop system, I was going to notice a substantial gain over stock calibration with Mikes tunes going into open loop. Sooooo.................the old wallet had to be opened a bit further. Not that I'm complaining though. Previous mods include....... Gibson headers. Gibson cat back 3" SI, 3" SO system. Edelbrock 75mm throttle body K&N cold air intake system. As a foot note...... Since installing the 93 perf. tune, Iv'e also noticed that the headlights are brighter, the windshield wipers clear the rain better, I have more bass in the stereo, the coffee stain on the floor mat has disappeared, and the power windows roll up and down quicker. Jeffro |
Hi jeffro,
Excellent, glad to hear you got all the parts on & got it fired up! Trucks like yours are a delight, as we get such nice gains on those C/L pigs that we look like hero's :) As you mentioned in response to 97f150f/s's question, the additional parts (primarily the 24# injectors) were done in order to support the power levels that result from the total of *all* your mods - not just to do the tuning. People need to remember that stock 19# injectors (which is what all 1997-2003 F-150's except Lightnings & supercharged Harleys have) can only support about 310 Hp at the *flywheel* in normally aspirated trim - and all it takes to get there with a 1999-2003 5.4 motor (and this is just one way of doing this, the most common) is our tuning, a decent intake kit & cat-back exhaust - anything more and you're over that limit when using our premium gas tuning, thus the injectors need to be upgraded at a minimum - some trucks also need the MAF & a fuel pump, while others do not - it just depends on the configuration as well as model year & powertrain of each individual vehicle. This is precisely why we advised this gentleman as we did, and he stepped right up and "did it right." And the end result is a much more powerful vehicle that got some additional power gain by going with the 90mm MAF as well, thanks to it's reduced restriction, in addition to the power gains from our tuning & fixing the no O/L operation problem, etc. So right now, that truck is making some really nice power thanks to the TOTAL of all of it's modifications - those that were there before, and the tuning now added - the injectors were added simply as a required "infrastructure" improvement, so that the truck would have enough injector capacity to support the additional power. (Obviously, some of this post is aimed at explaining this a bit to 97f150f/s as well, so he will understand why your truck needed the 24# injectors. :)) I just love tuning a truck like that, as the end result is a big gain in power, and a real transformation of it's driving enjoyment, power, performance, etc. I got a good laugh from the improved bas, removal of coffee stain, etc - cracked me up! :) Anyway, glad you are enjoying the end results, I'm just glad you got the parts all installed & got it fired up so you can enjoy it properly. It'll be nice to see what the datalogs look like so we can really dial it in. :) Have fun, |
Mike......
Should I let the ecm go through it's learning curve (approx. 1,000 mi's.) befor datalogging? Or can it be done right away? I'll probably call you with this question just in case you dont see it here. Again....Thanks for all the help and I hope to get some pics to you guys for your web site soon. (maybe even one with the sno-blade on) Jeffro |
"Jeffro" is full of it, the weather has been fine, i asked him SEVERAL times at work why he hasnt gotten his butt out and did it sooner, he said it was too cold (coulda said he's too old, im not sure) but when he came strolling in my department today with that ***** eatin' grin i knew he finally finished it..
Jeff, next time i tell you that you need something for your truck, listen to me. i remember the eye roll i got when i was talking about the tuner, now look at ya :p |
When you read the datalogging docs you'll see that you have to clear the PCM before you start datalogging anyway. So you can do it right away, there is no need to wait, as the PCM needs to be cleared just before hand anyway, to wipe out previous adaptive strategy adjustments. :)

But you will NEVER convince me that a truck needs a hood with scoops on it. |
