XCAL2 Installed!!!
XCAL2 Installed!!!
I finally received my xcal2 this week and have had a chance to drive my truck a bit w/ the new custom 93 tow tune. Prior to this I had a 2003 Lar 4x4V8 SC and bought the 1715 tuner. I was not impressed w/ this tuner, I did see a very small difference but not enough to recommend to others and not enough to want to get a tuner for future vehicles. I recently took advantage of the Ford "Friends and Family Special" and traded in my 2003 for the exact same model 2005. Based on my previous 1715 tuner I decided not to purchase another tuner (unless I purchased a vehicle w/ a diesel). After reading many positive posts on this site I decided to take a chance w/ the new & improved xcal2. In my opinion there is a night and day difference between the two. I would definately recommend the xcal2 w/ the 93 tow tune. (The only tune I have tried so far) There is a huge differnce in the overall power and acceralation!!!! My gas mileage avg went from 12.6 to about 9, but that is because I can not keep my foot from flooring it at every opportunity. From a complete stop up to around 20mph it still seems to lag a bit (no more or less than stock), but from 20mph to 70mph it feel like a completely different truck. (It screams!) I am not sure if I like the way it reeves all the way up to around 3K before it shifts to 2nd, but may just need to get used to that. It would seem to me that the gas mileage would go down, even w/ normal driving due to reving some much more before it shifts to each new gear. (I had read that many xcal2 users w/ the 93 tune have seen around a 1mpg improvement). Once I can stop having soo much fun w/ all this new power I will try to due a realistic comparison. I averaged 12.5mpg stock and keep track of it every tank full for 6 months. (unfortunately a lot of stop and go rush hour traffic) I would say that this is the best bang for the buck -period. I hope everyone else gets the same results I have. This would definately be the first mod I would do to your truck and I am so pleased that I took the chance on this updated product. Sorry for the long post and hope this helps any one that is on the fence like I was.
Nice to hear about that jennaj! I recently ordered one too, and hope to see the same results!
I heard (and read) about the 0-20 accelleration feeling like stock, but oh well!
Hey tigga, plz tell more stories...you make me laugh

Congrats jennaj!
I was in the 9MGP club for a while after I got my Xcal2 its so hard to stay out of it...exp after the Magnaflow SIDO and AF1, and it IS the best bang for the buck tuner out there!

Hi jennaj,
Glad you are enjoying our custom tuning - and as you noted, it's all the difference in the world between our custom tuning and any off-the-shelf product.
One tip 0- the higher part-throttle upshift points are controlled by your right foot - we do raise them by a small amount, just a few MPH, so that for any given throttle position, the vehicle will go a little bit faster (and thus turn a few more rpms) before upshifting. To make it upshift lower, just give it less throttle - this is the same basic adjustment that virtually all owners make.
We raise those part-throttle upshift points simply as a safety factor - when you make a 90 degree right hand turn from a stop sign or stop light, we want the truck to still be in 1st gear at least until you get the vehicle straightened out from the turn, so that just in case someone comes up behind you and you need to get out of the way, you can nail the throttle and have instant full power, without having to wait for a 2-1 downshift, for example.
From the factory, the 1-2 & the 3-4 upshift points on light throttle are the worst, meaning they need the most improvement - where the factory allows the truck, at very light throttle, to shift up into Overdrive at speeds as low as just 21 mph in some PCM codes, that needs to be raised a considerable amount for safety, and also to protect the transmission from way to many 3-4 - 4-3 upshift/downshift cycles.
Once your driving returns to a more normal pace, meaning once the novelty & fun of a new go-fast part wears off a bit (or maybe I should say, *IF* it ever does!
), then your fuel mileage has the potential to come up a bit and enjoy that benefit, too.
Have fun,
