Question for M. Troyer

Hello Mike,
As you know I have the SCT9100. I was wondering if anything can be done with the program so that my transmission would not downshift to 2nd from OD only to third when I put my foot to it. I had some scary downshifts in 16 degree weather when passing. I noticed that it was holding back. Timing backing off so I don't blow the motor?
Thanks, Peter

Hi Peter,

Good to see you again!

I'm not sure what you are talking about by your description, but no, there is nothing in your tuning that makes the vehicle "hold back," or anything else like that when you demand full power -

However, for example, I would not like the idea of changing the transmission shift schedules to prevent it from being able to downshift into 2nd if you are at low enough speeds in Overdrive - that would not be appropriate, and would ruin driveability, killing the ability of the vehicle to accelerate rapidly in an emergency when you are at a speed that is low enough to allow a downshift into 2nd gear when you are in Overdrive and punch the throttle.

Now that being said, we do not advise doing full-throttle downshifts out of Overdrive, it's hard on the transmission - the best route is always to simply tap the O/D cancel button & punch it, as a 3-2 is far easier on the transmission than a heavy-throttle 4-2. In fact, we have specifically been warning about this in our custom tuning for some time now to maximize transmission longevity. No Overdrive automatic likes to be shifting up into or out of Overdrive at full-throttle, that should be something that is done extremely rarely, only in an emergency - instead, get into the habit of either leaving O/D off at those lower speeds, or simply tap the O/D cancel button and then punch it - with your mods, your tranny will engage 3rd the instant you tap the O/D cancel, and will also go back into 2nd gear if you punch it at that point, *if* it as at a low enough speed. And there is nothing we have done in the tuning to cause it to "hold back," etc.

It sounds to me like something else is going on, as there is absolutely nothing in your tuning in that Lightning that is going to cause the PCM not to allow the vehicle to respond properly when you demand full power, no matter what gear you are in. We're not limiting power in your Lightning's tuning.

I suggest you give us a call to go over this - obviously this is a Tech Support matter, not something that could be solved or corrected here - give me a call so we can go over this properly and see what's really going on there, OK?

Thanks, & talk to you soon!
