Look thru this forum and you will see a bunch of people like the X-Cal2 with custom tunes from Mike Troyer (troyerperformance.com). I have the X-Cal and 87 octane performance, 91 octane performance, and 91 octane towing tunes and think it was worth every penny. Call Troyer Performance if you have some questions. They have wonderful customer service!

Welcome to the forum and get your wallet ready!

Hi Billy,

Welcome to F-150 Online!

In terms of what will actually get you the best results, we have specialized in performance tuning F-150's longer than anyone else, so most people go with our Troyer Performance custom tuning. Our tuning is much more in-depth than anything else available, and that combined with us having specialized in this platform for so many years is why results that are far better than any off-the-shelf type of device, for example.

In terms of the hardware used to deliver the new tuning to your vehicle's PCM (Powertrain Control Module), you cannot use a traditional "chip" on the 2004 & up F-150 like you could in most of the 2003 & earlier FoMoCo vehicles - trucks like yours have PCM's that must be flashed thru the OBD-II port with a hand-held tuning device that will store 3 different custom tunes, set up specifically for your individual needs & preferences - which is actually much easier & quicker to do!

The hardware we use to load our performance tuning into these trucks is the XCalibrator 2, the most advanced tuning device on the market - flash firmware, USB connectivity to your PC, complete enhanced-parameter diagnostics, built-in high-speed datalogging, and it's modular design that allows adding on later updates such as a touch-screen, etc make it the way to go, hands down.

The 5.4 3V engines use the ETC "throttle by wire" system, which from the factory have poor throttle response that we vastly improve - in addition to of course gaining significant raw horsepower and torque all the time, at any throttle position or rpm, vastly improving the transmission's shift characteristics, removal of the top speed limiter & so many other improvements we make, etc. With just our tuning alone, that heavy Lariat will be capable of running in excess of 130 mph - though the factory tires aren't rating for anything like that, of course! The difference we make in not only the full-throttle all-out performance, but also the day-to-day driveability of these vehicles is very significant, as you will see by spending some time reading the posts from other owner like yourself who are using our tuning - there are many posts here from them with their results, impressions, etc. that make good reading.

We cannot discuss pricing here on the boards, but as a registered member of F-150 Online, you get a special discount on all of our tuning products - so the hot tip is to give us a quick call at our number listed below, & we'll be more than happy to go over everything with you in appropriate detail - go over all the specific features, benefits, and your exact cost, etc.

Congratulations on your new 2005 F-150 - the Lariat is top-of-the line, a very nice (and expensive) vehicle. Please feel free to give us a call to go over all of this with you in appropriate detail, so you'll know just exactly what we can do for that vehicle, the difference between our custom tuning and everything else, and all the other info you'll want to know to make a fully informed decision.

Best of luck with your truck, & we hope to speak with you!
