Need advice on a programmer or chip
Need advice on a programmer or chip
OK,
I am brand new to this site. My buddy said the best information was here, so here I am. Now the age old question....Which is better, a chip or a programmer? I have heard good things about both, but I wanted feedback and advice. I know that Mike Troyer has good products. I was also told about Superchips, Edge and others. I am still a little unsure and want to have some added HP and torque.
Currently I have a F-150 SuperCrew 4WD with a K&N FIPK and dual 2.5 exhaust with Flow Masters. Nothing special, just a truck that sounds good.
Next step is a programmer. I was thinking about a larger throttle body, electric fans and under drive pulleys. Any thoughts and will these interfere with the programmer or chip?
Thanks for any and all feedback and information.

Hi EJ,
Well, if it's 2004 or newer F-150 you cannot use a chip, it has to be a "tuner" type of device.
On the earlier trucks, it doesn't matter if you use a chip or a tuner in terms of the power gains, that makes no difference in the performance of the vehicle - but it makes a BIG difference in convenience & features - by far, go with the XCalibrator 2 with our Troyer Performance custom tuning, as that is what will get you the best results and features you will wish you had if you go the chip route, trust me. You also get a significant special discount being a registered member of F-150 Online, so you'll want to call us for that special pricing.
Our electric fan kit & underdrive pulley set are also excellent additional mods, and do not affect the tuning - although if we're dong a custom tune on a vehicle that has those mods, I do like to slightly increase the idle speed in gear on the automatics, just to give them a bit more power steering assist in case they have taller tires & are doing parallel parking, or are jockeying a camping trailer, etc.
The larger throttle body is a good mod, but it comes further down on the bang for the buck order and I would wait on that mod until after you do the tune and the e-fans & underdrive pulleys, as that is as far as you can go before you have to upgrade the fuel injectors (on a 1999-2003 5.4 F-150) to keep up with the power levels you'll be at - that's not hard or expensive at all, it's just something that needs to be done after tuning, intake, exhaust, e-fans & pulleys, that's all.
Just give us a call at our number listed below to go over this in proper detail so you'll know what's the best order to do exactly which mods in, based on what model year & engine is in your truck, etc - we'll be happy to help.
Thanks for your post & good luck with your truck!

Thanks Mike,
I will be contacting you concerning my truck and the additional mods I plan to do. Any times better than others? Sorry I forgot to add that my year model is a 2003. My bad.
