Need better performance
Need better performance
I currently have an '02 Supercrew w/5.4L, 3.55 LS, AirForceOne intake, SC 1715 in performance tune, 2" drop shackles, 20" chrome wheels wearing 295/45-20 Falkens and 2.5" catback exhaust ending in duals out the back. I want to upgrade to the Xcalibrator 2 custom tuner, the Edelbrock 75 mm throttle body and the 4.10 gears. Is the performance gains of these new upgrades worth the money? Thanks for your help.
It is if you have someone like Mike Troyer install the tunes in the X-Calibrator. You can only get out what you have put into one.
I am using his custom tuned X-Calibrator 2, the Air Force 1 intake, and a simple bolt in replacement Magna-Flow muffler on my 6,000# 2004 Supercrew 4x4, running 285/70/17's and a 2 inch lift in the front.
Tonight on my way to work there was a 2005 Regular cab 4 x 2 with a 5.4 trying to play with me on the freeway. He was a short distance behind me in the next lane and several times he made a run to go around me. I could see him in my mirror and everytime he came on I hit the throttle and pulled away from him rather easily. It got to the point that I finally slowed to let him pass and he asked me to pull over so he could look at my truck. I did and discovered that I know his father. I could not feel it but he said everytime I hit the throttle my truck actually squatted a little in the read end. We talked for a few minutes and I told him what mods I had and he quickly asked for Mikes business number and wrote it down. Another soon to be satisfied customer I would guess......

Hi Havoc3,
In short - yes, those mods will definitely be well worthwhile.
The 4.10's will get your torque multiplication back up with those bigger wheels & tires, of course - and going with our *custom* tuning compared to what is in that 1715 will make quite a difference as well - you'll see about a 50% larger power gain with our custom tuning over what you are getting from that 1715 unit!
However, before upgrading the throttle body (or in addition to), I also recommend upgrading to 24# injectors, as you are going to be at or beyond beyond the 100% limits of your factory 19# injectors - let me explain...........
Stock, your truck's 5.4 2V SOHC V8 has 260 HP (SAE Net at the flywheel) - your stock factory 19# injectors can support, in these heavy trucks, about 310 HP or so - for anything more than 310 HP (again, we're talking flywheel here) your stock 19# injectors just cannot supply enough fuel when you are at full-throttle under heavy load. Now just driving around easy cruising, sure, they'll be fine - but when you drop the hammer, they won't keep up and the engine will run lean, because what results with the combination of our *custom* tuning in a premium gas max performance tune, the Air Force One and a good cat-back exhaust, is about a 320+ HP level at the flywheel on a "healthy" truck. Now on one of our lower-power tunes, you could potentially get by if you didn't use full-throttle except at lower rpms - but if we look at this as we really *should*, meaning not allowing the injectors to hit much more than 80%-85% duty cycle, and having plenty of fuel for full-throttle use, then when you upgrade to our custom tuning along with your existing mods, you should also drop in a set of 24# injectors.
If money is tight, you could skip the 75mm throttle body and do the 24# injectors instead. But if you can afford to (and it's not really expensive), the really hot tip would be to go ahead and do the 75mm throttle body *and* our fuel system upgrade package, which consists of a 90mm MAF meter, 24# injectors, and a 190 l/hr fuel pump (the factory fuel pump has a little bit more capacity than the stock 19# injectors do, but not a lot). Now doing *that* upgrade, meaning adding our custom tuning and what we call our fuel system upgrade for those 1997-2003 F-150's, you will be adding anywhere from a low of about 25 HP more to as much as 37 additional HP over what you are making right now with the 1715's premium gas performance tune - and most importantly, your fuel system will be able to support not only that power level, but also have headroom for some further upgrades if you decide to do them in the future.
So - at a minimum, I'd say to do the 24# injectors in place of the throttle body if money is really tight - but if you can afford to (and it's not expensive), just go ahead with our fuel system upgrade package along with the new custom tuning, and really step up the performance of the truck as well as insure the engine won't go lean from not having sufficient fuel delivery capacity - that's really the most important issue when upgrading these 5.4 2V trucks, you run out of injector & fuel pump pretty quick.
Please feel free to give us a call if you would like to go over this in more detail, have us work up a package price on this for you, etc., our number is listed below for your convenience.
Best of luck whatever you decide!

Hi Bartak,
Same thing applies, all 1997-2003 F-150's have 19# injectors stock, 4.2 V6, 4.6 & 5.4 V8 (also applies to 2004 Heritage edition). So yes, you have 19# injectors stock, so yes, they are good to the same power level on all V8's (since they all have Qty. 8 - 19# injectors until you get to the new body style trucks, which use 24# units), about 310 HP at the flywheel - but because the 4.6 makes less power stock compared to the 1999-2003 260 Hp 5.4 F-150's, you can do more mods on those 220-231 HP 4.6 trucks than the 1999-2003 260 HP 5.4 trucks can do before you run out of injector (& overall fuel delivery system in general) capacity.

Hey Mike, I am also looking at getting one of your tunes when I get back from Afganistan, also I was looking for the injectors I can't find them on there, how much are they? And keep up the great work, I lived in Virginia for 19 years of my life and drove nothing but ford trucks and never new you were there until I found this excellent website. You are the best
Hi 02Sport,
The most important thing is that we want to see you back home SAFELY from Afghanistan - and thanks from all of us for serving your country!
Our web site (www.TroyerPerformance.com) lists *maybe* 2% of everything that we do - I have to apologize for that, we're so behind on the web site compared to everything we actually offer & do - so you don't find things like superchargers, injectors, and many other things that we do for these trucks listed there yet. We went thru 4 different developers for that web site and ended up firing every one of them and doing it ourselves, from scratch - so that is why it shows what it does, as we do everything in-house for the site. It certainly does not reflect everything we actually do here at Troyer Performance, and we are working on that, and expect to have that rectified later this year.
To answer your question - we cannot discuss specific parts pricing here, that's against the rules of F-150 Online for us to to do that - so we have to ask that you contact us privately for that info. We also provide special pricing on our custom tuning products for registered members of F-150 Online! Please shoot us an email letting us know your "in-country" over there, and our staff will get you the info you need, so you can act on it once you get back home. And of course, if you ever get a chance to actually call us in the meantime, we're more than happy to go over all of this in proper detail with you that way.
Injector pricing depends largely on the size of the injector needed, of course -unless your truck is supercharged, chances are it needs 24# injectors, and they are not expensive - significantly less than custom tuning, for example. And of course an injector size change also requires custom tuning, so what most of our customers do is simply have us give them a package deal on the tuning & injectors (and anything else you might need) at the same time (if your budget can handle doing it that way), so you get the lowest possible total price on everything you'll want & need.
Thanks again for your post, & we look forward to hearing from you so we can go over the details of your vehicle's exact year, make, engine, transmission, any modifications you have already done and those you are contemplating, etc., so we'll know exactly what it will (and won't) actually need, and can thus get you all the correct info for your truck!
Be safe out there,
