trans performance

I'm planning on a superchip in ther near future and I already have a trans go shift kit. Is the chip going to make my shifts too harsh to be comfortable? Does the tuner allow me to adjust shift firmness? I'm most interested in better throttle response and better towing power.

Thanks in advance Mike. You really help make this a great resource.

it depends on what level you set the transgo to when it was installed. mine was on the first setting and i had to have Mike T. back out the shift firmness in the chip because i was chirping tires with just the transgo. Luckily the tuner has that ability and whatever chip he provides you, you will be able to tell him what you need. TP takes good care of their customers.

Thank you,
I'm assuming that my trans go in in a mild position. My shifts are positive and comfortable. If the superchip can moderate the shift stiffness, I'm ready to install. Can anyone recomed the "custom" over the standard supertuner. If I can adjust shift firmnes, I"m leaning toward the supertuner.

Hi Walt.

You can also adjust shift firmness with the custom tuners ( SCT 9100/9300), either by requesting modified email tunes from the tuning guru, or by using ExtremeTune.

If you are unsure, go with the emailed updates. This requires details about your specific configuration and needs, but the additional performance gains and targeted tweaks over the 'canned' SuperTuner make it the better choice if you can budget for it.

If you have done some browsing in this forum, you already know who our preferred tuning guru is ;-))

BTW, Walt, what made you go with theTransgo over the FTVB? I'm looking at this mod myself... piggy is working overtime!

Cheers
Vic

MGD--if your not comfortable installing the shift kit yourself order the FTVB. The difference, the FTVB has the shift kit installed for you--you just change the valve body's out.

WALT-The custom tuner gives more power but does not let you choose the setting once its programmed into the hand held device, you install the tune as programmed. Talking with the tuner to let him know what you want is the key. I run a B&M shift kit and had to have the firmness backed off. He can adjust your shift points and all that for you. The 1715 (generic tuner) works fine and will do what you want, the custom yields more power. emailed tunes will cost ya, I do believe that you only get so many free ones. Bought my tuner (9100) a year ago, he will do a tune for me but I'll bet its going to cost a minimal fee.

I had the tanny rebuilt by guy I trust. Been in the bussnies for over 25 years. He said that he planned to put a kit in and I asked him if it was a trans go. He said thats the one he used and I remembered the name from this board so I OKed it. I didn't remember any bad coments about the trans go from the board and I'm happy with it. Between that and the torque converter, the last 30k have been a much better ride. Thanks for the info

Transgo is probably the most popular shift kit for the 4r70w. not necessarily any better than any other shift kit, just the most popular.

Any good tranny builder will rebuild the tranny with a shift kit. It will make the tranny clutch packs wear better due to less slippage and the tranny should last longer. Its pretty much standard procedure when rebuilding trannies.

I was going to have a local shop install a Transgo Shift kit in my 4r70w and the guy told me that those transmissions don't last when you install a shift kit. I wasn't a member of this forum then, or I would have told him otherwise. Has anybody had any problems with this? I talked to Mike Troyer and he suggested the Transgo, and I figured that since he suggested it, it must be good. I had replaced the transmission with 38000 miles on it, it burned up the 3rd and 4th clutch paks. I had the E4OD in my 97 and in my 93 and loved, but I don't know a lot about the 4r70w. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi WaltF150 & jhoparmy,

No, it is NOT true that installing the Transgo shift kit is going to hurt your 4R70W in any way - bunk - we've been using them for many years, so don't worry about that.

For the 4R70W owner who wants to install a shift kit, we *do* recommend using the Transgo shift kit over any other - it is the best IMHO and we've pretty much used them all. It includes things like an overpressure relief so you don't snap parts (something many other shift kits leave out), and has multiple levels of installation, as well as an optional instructional video - very cool. Now for someone who has never installed a shift kit before on any automatic transmission and feels a bit shakey about doing it themselves, I do advise getting the video - or simply remember that the newer the truck in the 1997-2003 series, the more often you'll find that on the first 2 levels of installation (firmness levels) some of the orifices are already opened up enough, so you have eth nice surprise of less work than the docs tell you - and that is easily recognized when you see a particular orifice size already as large or larger than shown in the docs - pretty simple, actually.

The Factory Tech Valve Body is a dream to install too - if you don't mind spending over twice as much money, it does a wonderful job, and we carry them as well, as a lot of peole love them, as do we. But either the Transgo or the FTVB will accomplish the same basic thing, allowing for a much quick clutch fill time via increased fluid *volume* flow.

As long as the Transgo kit is installed at either of the first 2 levels, there isn't anything different that is needed in these trucks tuning-wise when using the Transgo shift kit with *our* custom tuning, or in the Superchips "standard" performance tuning in their chips or "MAX" series Micro Tuners. You'll get a smooth shift at light-throttle, and then a nice snappy upshift at wide-open throttle - just like it should be. So the vehicle can still be driven by the wife, daughter, or in inclement weather etc with no problems, but then when you drop the hammer, it shifts like you want it to.

If you want to go over any other details on this, just give us a call & we'll be happy to.

Thanks Mike,

I remember talking to you about this. I'm thinking that I'm going to have one installed and just put on the 2nd level, I believe that's the towing one. Thanks again for your help.
