Will I need a tune?

im want to order a cai and catback for my 2005 6.8 v10 superduty. will i need a custom tune? i know you normally wouldn't but im not familiar with the new 3v computer setup and i have heard the smallest changes require tuning. any suggestions for a tuner if necessary or even for the cai and catback?

thanks

Hi Steel City,

Thanks VERY much for asking first before taking a plunge - very smart move, as the 3-valve modular motors have the new MAS (mass airflow sensor) setup - thus you have to be very careful with regard to any changes to the air intake tract.

As things stand right now, only the 5.4 3V engine in the F-150 has intake kits available (and even at that, there are only 2) that do not require custom tuning - the 4.6 3V engine in the 2005 Mustang, and your 6.8 3V V10 engine do not have any intake kits available that do not require a complete custom tune to be done (that we know of) - heck, I'm not aware of anyone who is actually *shipping* a complete intake kit for the V10 at all, among the "major" intake kit manufacturers. Somebody might be shipping kits that we don't know of, that is always possible - but we haven't seen a kit yet from any of the major companies we normally test. Now if you happen to run across a kit actually shipping for your 3-valve V10, please feel free to give us a call at our number listed below with that information, as we'll want to discuss that with you in proper detail - we'll want to also talk directly with the manufacturer of the kit, take a look at it, etc., before we make a real recommendation.

As things stand right now for your 6.8 3V V10, to our knowledge there really isn't a good intake kit you can use - we're waiting on companies to bring out intake kits for the 3-valve V10 so we can test them, just as we had to test on the 5.4 3V in the F-150's for the past 2 years.

So right now, unless you happen to run across a kit made specifically for your 3-valve V10 that is actually shipping so that you can call us with that info to check out for you, the only thing I would do would be to install a low-restriction drop-in air filter element in the stock air intake tract, to replace the factory paper air filter element - which is usually worth about 7-8 HP on the V-10 engines.

In general, the V10's always come last with regard to performance parts as there are so few of them built compared to the number of other engines delivered in SuperDuty vehicles (like the Powerstroke diesel) - so the V10 owners virtually always have to wait longer for good performance parts.

Give us a call at our number listed below & our staff can take care of a drop-in element for now, as well as go over other options such as tuning, exhaust, etc.
