Question

that's interesting cuz I've got a '01 HD SCrew chipped with a Superchips brand chip and I can't chirp the rears at all. I've even got a 3.73 with 20" wheels... still can't.

That's a bummer on your HD not gettin any rubber. I have one on order and I'll be bummed if I can't get a little scratch now and then. Heck, my v6 Dakota I'm driving now amazes me how it will lite em up from a dead start.

Hi Guys,

I just wanted to kinda chime in here with a comment about this whole thing of which F-150's will spin the tires, and which won't. (And of course we're happy for fst5.4ltr that he's able to smoke 'em at will)

First, we all know about the basics, meaning the effective power-to-weight ratio combined with the rear gear ratio for torque miltiplication, as these F-150's can weigh anywhere from a bit under 4000 lbs. in the lightest V-6 manual tranny short cab 2WD configuration to close to 7000 lbs. in the very heaviest configurations. So how the F-150 is configured, and of course which mods it has, are a big factor.

But that aside, which tires and the ambient road temperatures at that time have a heck of a lot to do with this as well. The factory 16" tire package has the least dry traction, and consequently is much easier to "light up". Combine that with winter time, when ambient air temps are low & air is nice & dense for the intake air charge, and then the cold pavement temps reducing traction even further, and you have a recipe where it's far easier to spin the tires.

With "bikestudga's" situation, he has 20" wheels so obviously they aren't stock tires, and he probably has considerably higher dry traction as a result. We don't know if he has any other mods in addition to his Superchip, so that too could potentially be an issue, but the tires alone, to say nothing of air & pavement temps, have far more to do with this than most people realize, so it's something to consider.

As we can see from fst5.4ltr's comments, he was able to spin the tires bone-stock, and he has the 16" tire package, etc.

What I'm saying is, it's not just a matter of power-to-weight, though that is of course the single biggest factor, but it's also which tires and their effective dry adhesion levels, as well as ambient air & pavement temps that have a considerable effect as well.

Good luck fellas!

Mike -

Once again, your verbosity is astounding! I have a '01 Harley SuperCrew with the "stock" 20" wheels, Goodyear Eagle GTII 275/45 R20 rubbers (H rated, btw). I would think that since my truck's weighted heavily from midline forward, I should be able to get a little squeek out of em... but, alas, I'll have to stick to the straight and narrow...

thanks for the info anyway -

jeff

My tires wont light up on launch, well, depends. When it wants to is a better way to say it. Sometimes I can do a very long 30-50 feet patch or longer if I hold down the gas, and sometimes it just puts you in your seat and goes.

Hi bikestudga,

How could I ever have forgotten that the HD model comes with those beautiful 20" wheels stock!

I didn't catch that you had the HD model, I just saw the 20" mentioned in your post, my goof, but the logic and the analogy still holds basically true. There is a tremendous amount of difference between the various wheel & tire factory options on these F-150's in terms of their dry traction levels, and when that is combined with air & pavement temp variations, we quickly see that in these heavy vehicles, this can make all the difference in which ones will and which will not spin the tires, even if otherwise identically equipped.

My point was simply that the 20" wheel & tire setup, which *is* stock on the HD model but not on any other F-150, has considerably more dry traction than either the 16" or the 17" tires the other F-150's have, in our experience with our customers. It also seems that the 16" tires have the least dry traction, the 17" a bit more, and then probably the 20" tires on your HD model, and last, the 18" units on the Lightning seem to have the most dry traction, from what we've seen.

You want a good laugh? Many years ago, when I was managing a body shop for a Chrysler-Plymouth dealership, we had a customer with a tiny little Toyota economy sedan, with an automatic transmission. I don't remember the model, it was a tiny little car with an even smaller 4-banger for a motor, that had *zero* guts to it. However, if it's owner manually shifted it's automatic transmisison just right, you could catch it going into second gear right about at it's torque peak, and get a satisfying and very surprising little "screech!" out of the tires on that 1-2 upshift, go figure. Of course, it wouldn't break the tires loose from a standstill even on wet roads, but if you got it just right, it would give you a little 1-2 scratch in dry conditions. Funny little car!

Funny tou mention that Mike. I had a 1979 Z-28 pretty much stock at first, just duals. I would take off with the shifter in 2nd and then shift it into Drive exactly when it hit 2nd gear and hit hard and yes, grab a 2nd gear scratch (as we called it back then). Peole couldn't believe I could do that. And I could even do it without going WOT; just firm acceleration and "bark".

Of course then I blew it up and rebuilt a little badder yet mild enough along with a mild shift kit. Still couldn't take any my friends that had, what the heck were they back then, 6.something (403) TA's. The old "Smokey and the Bandit" cruisers. Man they had some top end.....

Don't flatter yourself assuming you are the only person who has ever built and driven high HP/performance/speed vehicles.

OK, I hesitate to do this but first of all guy, Grow UP!!!, now you will probably post some stupid response telling me to shut up or that your old or what ever, even more proving my point. I am 21, so I believe I have beef to talk with being that you seem immature to me.

Second, anyone can pay $350's to drive for 10 or 20 laps at 150 or so at a speed way. (National track regulations restrict non race licenced drivers to 155, not 180) so Get off your high horse.

Third why are you boasting about punching it next to a mustang at a light? Would you say the same thing about a herse just because he didn't want to waste his time? If you want a mustang to race you, I have an 83 mustang with a 347 stoker in the garage and all I have to do is restab the distributor and I will give you what you want. No fear right?
Now, we are all f-150 guys, and hopefully some fellow mustangers (Corralers) too, and you are more than welcome to interact with us at this great site, but don't throw down that stupid crap that you brag about to your 14 year old brother that doesn't know the differece. And don't tell me I can't tell you what to post because I know I can't. I am just trying to save you the embarrasment.
Good Day...
