Hi Blue V-6,

The Superchip Flip Chip is simply another type of Superchip, that has the ability to store any combination of 2 different programs, and allows you to select which program you're running on by literally flipping the attached switch, hence it's name.

It was originally designed for drag racers who were using nitrous oxide, and thus needed one program to run with the nitrous, and another program for normal operations.

These days, they're used in many different situations, in supercharged engines so you'll have a fall-back mode in case you get a bad tank of gas, etc., or in these regular F-150's, some people have us configure them with one program for use with regular gas, and then the other program being our normal performance program which requies the use of premium gas. And yes, we can make a Superchip Flip Chip for the V-6's as well as most other Ford vehicles.

In any event, it's still a Superchip, it just has the ability to store 2 different Superchip programs, and is called the Flip Chip.

Thanks a whole lot Mike!! Well I'm still a newbie at this, but I've still got some more questions...would there be significant differences if I flip b/w 87 octane and 92 octane? How exactly do I custom program the chip? Which exhaust do you think would be the overall best (low end power, sound, mpg, etc.) along with the chip for my six banger? AND (phew!!)...how much is it gonna cost?! Thanks again Mike!

Hi Blue V-6,

Yes, there are significant differences between the 87 & the 92 octane programs, but only in 1 area, which is engine power output; when running on the regular gas program, the power gain is going to be very small, maybe 3-5 hp at best. The vehicle will still feel peppier, thanks to the removal of transitional spark retards, etc., and if you have an automatic transmission, of course you'll get the benefit of improved shift characteristics as well in both programs. But the real raw power gain in the engine will only come when you run it on the premium gas program, so that's the main difference between those 2 programs, the engine's power ouput.

As far as "how you custom program the chip", you won't do that yourself, all of that is done by Superchips for you. You only need "custom programming" in these late-model F-150's for major mechanical modifications, things like superchargers, nitrous oxide, ported heads, camshaft changes, etc., as a loose general rule. You don't need any custom programming in these F-150's for things like K&N air filters, airbox elimination kits, exhaust system changes, etc. And, should you decide to make major modifications that would require custom programming at a later time, then you just have us update your Superchip with a new custom program for those modifications, as it can always be updated thanks to it's flash design.

With regards to which aftermarket cat-back exhaust is "the best" for your 4.2 V-6 F-150, that all depends on what your idea of a good sound is, and people have many different ideas about what sounds good to them, so it's very subjective. Me personally, on any V-6 or 4 cylinder engine, I always prefer the Borla brand of cat-back exhaust system. It's never too loud or "boomy", it won't "drone" inside the cabin when cruising, and has a very nicely refined "growl" that turns heads without being overly loud. It's a little bit more expensive than other systems, but it's made of T304 stainless steel and has a million-mile warranty. Nothing else will give that kind of excellent V-6 tone that we've ever heard.

The power gains from most cat-back systems for these V-6 F-150's yield about the same basic power gains, which are about 8-10 more horsepower. Some systems will get you that power gain but also cost some low-end torque on part-throttle, and the Borla doesn't do that, you pick up nice torque on part-throttle right where you need it, so for us, we prefer the Borla on the V-6 F-150, but you may feel differently.

With regards to the pricing of the Superchip & the Flip Chip, the Webmaster here has a strict policy of Vendors not discussing exact pricing issues, to keep the message boards free of what is considered "blatant commercial content", so please just shoot us a quick email, or, you can just click on the link below on our signature line which will take you to our online ordering system here, and you can see that pricing.

And of course if you'd like to go over any details, etc., please feel free to give us a call, we're always happy to speak with you.

Good luck with your truck,
