Wondering about a Chip
Whats going on all?
I have recently purchased a 1998 ford f150 v8 triton. I am currently in the process of adding on accessories and such. What i am really interested in are the computer chips. I would like to know if anyone has any info on the types of chips that would go with my truck along with a cat-back system and any other mods I could use to increase horse power and mpg. The K&N filter is on order and i would like to learn somemore on Chips and Cat-back systems. Any help or info would be grateful.

Hi bigNAnative,
Welcome to F-150 Online, we're delighted you dropped by and joined us here! It's a great web site chock-full of all kinds of information to help you learn about this vehicle and get the performance you want & need.
The top 3 best "bang-for-the-buck" mods for these trucks (and most computer-controlled vehicles these days) are listed in order of powre gainer per dollar spent:
1.) Optimize the powertrain programming with the Superchip - this gives about a 10%-12% increase in power, and if your F-150 is an automatic you'll love what it does to clean up the shift characteristics too! This product is availalbe directly from us here at Performance Products, and for details, please just shoot us an email or give us a call, our contact info is below, in our signature line.
2.) Reduce restriction in the air intake tract, using one of the airbox elimination kits. (K&N's FIPK kit, the Airaid brand, or the Air Force One brand) This will get you a 12 hp gain on the 4.6, and a 14 hp gain on the 5.4 motor. They are available in several different brands right here in the F-150 Online Store, which you can access by clicking on the link on the left side of your screen here, that says "Online Store".
3.) Reduce restriction on the exhaust side, using a good aftermarket cat-back exhaust system. These are also available in the F-150 Online Store, and we recommend the Gibson swept-side system specifically, as it's flow engineered for towing, to preserve torque at low rpms on part-throttle, and you don't have to ever do any towing to get the benefits from it, it works very nicely on any of these heavy vehicles. There are of course ogther brands too, but that is the one we suggest for most people.
If you'd like to give us a call, we'll be happy to go over all of this nad more in detail with you, even though all we supply is the Superchip, we get to see what all these others parts do on these vehicles, so we can provide a good overview for you to give some thought to when making your decisions.
We hope you'll be able to hang out with us here on F-150 Online when you get spare time, & best of luck with your F-150!

I did some extensive research before going with the Superchip brand. I could not be more pleased with the results!!
The best thing to do is pull up a chair and spend a few hours reading all of the threads in this section.

If Mike doesn't do some cut and pasting, he's gotta be pretty brain dead.
He's not, so, of course he does!

Hi NOLA & HarleyGuy,
Actually, I'm almost ashamed to admit that it's not cut & pasted, and I actually do type that all out each time, how's that for being ironically technologically handicapped?
I guess it does get repetitive for those of us who have been here awhile, and my apologies for that, we just try to let people know based on bang-for-the-buck which mods seem to be working, and it has really a reflection of exactly what many here have done, and they're all the basics of gas-engine hot-rodding principles of all time; for example, with the Superchip, we give the owner of the computer controlled vehicle the benefit of being able to do what we used to do manually on each of our vehicles, which was to optimize the spark advance curve via changing springs & weights inside the distributor, and with it's initial lead setting, but with far more accuracy and precise control upon far more variables within that process. The same with regards to controlling fuel delivery optimized for each cylinder (application permitting), as compared to jetting a carb., and that's also now much more precise, and those have traditionally been among the basic starting points in typical horsepower-searching, along with getting the motor to breath of course, both on intake and upon exhaust.
So in a way things have changed greatly with the advent of computer controled vehicles, in terms of how all these time-tested methods of increrasing power are actually implemented & controlled, but luckily for many of us, the aftermarket has responded with effective ways to optimize those same basic areas that have always been considered the first & most basic essentials of making more power. So while the same basic items still add power that have always added power, the exact devices, and the precise order of which delivers the best bang-for-the-buck has evolved. And that's what many people come here to find out, & learn, as F-150 Online has a constant influx of new people. Hopefully we're in some small way helping the newcomer or the person who is doing their first-ever modifications avoid what we refer to as the infamous "pay-to-learn syndrome", is the bottom line. If we're a bit repetitive in the process, our apologies.

You are a far better typist than I am, Mike. Wow!
I'd have to do some cutting and pasting or would be typing all day long. Also, you rarely make mistakes, something else I usually do. (Always discover all the mistakes *after* the darn message is posted, too.)
Ever get your typing speed measured? My wife types at 120 wpm. Me, about 50 wpm on a good day.

Mike,
Where does the aftermarket MAS airflow sensors come in the performance line-up in relation to the other products as far as "bank for the buck"? I remember reading a post where you recomended a different chip when using one of these. If your getting that much more air, and the chip gives it the proper fuel, it's got to make more h.p., doesn't it?
This is my first post, I've been reading posts for a week now. Just found the site. What a bunch of good info!!! I'll be contacting you soon for a chip for my 1999 F150 5.4
Thanks,
Bill
