Post Down Side to a Flip-Chip.

I love what I've been reading about the superchip and all it does for our trucks. I was wondering if there is any difference between the program for premium on a flip-chip and the program on a regular superchip chip. Is there any reason the purchase the regular chip if the flip chip is available? Is there a price difference? Basically, I want to get a superchip and I want to know if I am getting less with the flip chip, or if the program is the same that is on the regular superchip!

The flip chip allows you to have 2 seperate programs for your truck. I have mine set up to run either 87 or 92 ocatane. I will not get the horspower and torque benefits in the 87 program, but all the other performance enhancements are still there (i.e., transmission shifts, rev limiter, top speed limiter, etc.)

I bought the flip chip just to get the free one time custom programming. I went with bigger than stock tires and wanted to get the speedo fixed. Since my truck is a '99, there is no reduction gear in the tailshaft of the tranny to change. Only a custom program can solve this problem. I also figure, why run 92 ocatane on a road trip of 700 miles? Who needs more horsepower and torque to roll down the highway with the cruise set on 70MPH? Just flip the switch, fill up with 87, and save some dough for the next performance mod!!!!

Question

What is Flip chip? Where do you buy these? How much do they cost? Did it do anything for your MPG?
By the way what part of Cleveland are you from? I grew up there in Brook Park.

I have a super chip that I purchased on this site from MIke. My question is, can it be changed to a flip chip and if so at what cost? I will be going on an 1100 mile drive and don't really want to put super for the ride.

harley
you may want to remove the chip for the trip. the flip-chip costs more. I would let it in and pay for the gas myself.

Hey I'm a Sanduky Ohio guy here. We have Lake Erie covered. I have flip-chip and heard that it is a good idea to disconnect the negative on your battery before switching programs. Any thoughts on this Mike?

Thumbs up

I also have a Flip-Chip, and love the advantage of flipping a switch to change between regular and premium fuel!
Mav07, The Flip-Chip is more expensive than the regular SuperChip, but it's the same price as a custom SuperChip. So, it's almost like buying a Custom Chip, and getting a second chip with another program for free! As rockycarl stated, it's nice to have the luxury of changing as the need arises, and in his case, he needed the custome chip anyway. There is no reason to remove the battery terminal to switch between programs, as weandog#7 asked, but you do have to turn off the ignition before switching. The Flip-Chip also eliminates the need to crawl under the dash and remove the chip if you wish to save fuel costs on long trips as harleyrules asked. Also, if you do remove and replace the chip, it would be wise to remove the battery terminal prior to replacing the chip! If your can afford the initial outlay, and want to have a choice, I strongly recommend the Flip-Chip!

Hi CHMGLAD,

The Superchip and the Superchip Flip Chip are available directly from us here at Performance Products, and we have an online ordering system right here on F-150 Online for your cconvenience. The link to access it is just below, in our signature line right below this message. The Webmaster here has a strict policy (and a good one) of not discussing exact pricing issues, etc. here on these public message boards, so for that type of info, we ask that you please just shoot us a quick email, or if you like, give us a call, we're always happy to speak with you.

Briefly, the Flip Chip is much like the standard single-program Superchip; the difference is that it's 2 complete chips in one unit, with 2 separate programs, that allows you to select which program you're running by at the flip of it's switch. It was originally invented years ago for drag racers who needed one program for use with nitrous oxide, and then another program for the rest of the time. In these F-150's, when people select the Flip Chip they usually have us set it up with a pair of programs that allows you to run it on either regular 87 octane gas, or 92 octane premium gas. Keep in mind that the engine will gain power only on the premium gas program, that is the basic operating principle of any performance chip for a gasoline engine. However, you'll get all the other benefits in either program, such as improved automatic transmission shifting, removal of transitional spark retards and ts limiters, etc.

I hope that information helps a bit, and of course please feel free to give us a shout for details, ok?

Good luck with your truck,

Hi MAV07,

There is usually no difference between those 2 programs in most cases; the program for premium gas in the Flip Chip is the exact same as the performance program in the standard single-program Superchip, *unless* the customer requests some custom programming compensations for other mechanical mods. But by and large, the answer to your question is, it's the same program. Then on the other side of the Flip Chip, we set it up with a program that can be used on regular 87 octane gas; of course there isn't much power gain when you do that, maybe 2-5 hp at best on 87, but for some people's needs, it works well to give them maximum fuel flexibility, and then maximum power when they want to run the premium gas.

The Flip Chip is more expensive than the single-program Superchip, as it is 2 complete chips in one, with 2 separate programs, and it's cost also includes the cost of any custom programming needed at time of purchase. So it's the way to go if you need custom programming, or if you want that kind of flexiblility in your fuel choices; otherwise, you go with the single-program Superchip.

If you'd like to go over this in more detail, please feel free to give us a shout.

HI Weandog,

No, you do not need to disconnect the battery when you flip the switch on the Flip Chip, you just flip it and as you drive the next 50-100 miles, that program will come in. However, if it's a nitrous oxide program on one side, like for drag racers, that would be ok to use immediately. This depends somewhat on just what the exact differences between the 2 programs are, of course.

You would only disconnect the battery if you wanted to do perhaps some drag strip or instrumented testing to identify the exact performance difference between the 2 programs in a back-to-back situation, in which case you'd want to do that disconnect & clear the computer's memory, so you can get the fresh program loaded each time immediately.

For practical purposes, you don't need to disconnect the battery when you flip the switch.

Thanks Mike,
I to drag this truck, I run 93-94 octane on the street program for the 28 inch tall tires. I run 96-100 octane on the race program and it is for the 26 inch E/T streets. So yes I will disconnect the negative terminal. Are there any plans for Superchips to come out with a chip with three or four programs? I'd like to have a nitrous program and a blank program for theft purposes also. I just don't want to take the chip out and put another one in when I choose to run nitrous.
Thanks again Mike,
