Question Rev Limiter

Everbody seems well pleased with the Super
Chip in reference to speed and horsepower.
Deciding on which chip right now but one
question never gets good answer when I ask.
"Does it raise the Rev Limiter"?
Tucked tail couple times when going to WOT
and having computer shut off engine before
trans shifted. Seems limiter is set around
4900 rpm's. Caused unamusing Backfire!

1996 F150 XLT
5.0 engine, 4R70 trans (A0DE)
K&N Filter, Haders, 3 inch exit/ Flowmaster

cantpay
It raises the revs a few hundred & erases top speed.

...but, I don't think any of the vendors here will sell to you.

Maybe if you change your name to "I'llScrapeItTogetherSomehow"

Hi cantpay,

For most vehicles, including yours, the rev limiter is normally raised by 200-300 rpm, and the top speed limiter, which is a completely different and separate function, is normally removed.

Both functions basically act the same, meaning whenever their respective limits are reached, what happens is a complete fuel shutoff, it's not a nice "soft" type of limiter. So when you're doing almost 100 mph, and the ts limiter kicks in, it's almost like you hit the brakes, and can be rather startling if you're not ready for it.

However, you shouldn't have the engine hitting a rev limiter before it upshifts with the factory program, that usually can only happen if you manually hold it in gear instead of letting it shift automatically, unless there is a problem with the transmission (shift solenoids, etc.), or something else has been altered. You see, the WOT upshift point is always set under the rev limiter, so you'll only hit the rev limiter like that if you're holding it manually in gear, or if something is wrong somewhere or has been changed, like a gear ratio change or a tire size change, etc., something to throw off the VSS (vehicle speed sensor system).

Also, your tach may not be precisely accurate, few electronic tachs are, especially factory units, when accelerating hard. Those 5.0's have a rev limiter of over 5000 rpm, usually about 5250 rpm, so your tach may be off a little bit here.

If you like, please feel free to give us a call and we'll be happy to go over all of this with you, to determine exactly what's happening and how to best correct it, etc.

Wink

Thank you guys for the input. My spelling of
on "headers" is almost as bad as my user-
name, eah?
Going to try it again, pretty sure I was not
manually shifting it.
Mike:your dead on about change, went up to 31
inch skins underneath. Even still, figured a
little 302 would be allowed sing louder than
that! Be back shortly with results, no matter
how bad, wait for roads to dry first!
