HI skicrave,

That's an excellent question, and I like your analogy of using the right tool for the task at hand.

The way we calibrate the upshift characteristics of the automatic transmissions in these F-trucks is not a tire-chirping "musclecar" type of upshift, even at full-throttle; it's done with towing specifically in mind, as many of these vehicles are obviously used for towing. In every one of our over 8000 applications, each of them is done keeping the original character of the vehicle in mind, that is indeed an important consideration, we agree.

The transmission is going to still shift smoothly when towing; as you give it progressively more and more throttle opening, the upshifts will get progressively firmer in response, to reduce slippage under load, just as they should. However, even at full-throttle it's not a "tire-chirper", we're not trying to make these 2-ton+ pickup trucks shift like a Trans Am.

We understand your concern perfectly, and the transmission calibration is designed with towing in mind in these vehicles, unless the customer specifically wants us to do a custom program for tire-chirping muscle-car types of shifts.

Mike- Thanks for the response. Look for my order sometime in the near future. I just have one more question. Does the computer need to be removed everytime you install or remove the chip? Thanks for the answers.

Hi jakdad,

No, a chip and a filter will not "void your warranty", you are protected by the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, which is the specific legislation governing the affect of aftermarket parts of any kind (performance, appearance, or replacement) on new vehicle warranties.

The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act basically states that you can use any parts you want, as long as those parts do not cause actual damage to the vehicle. In order to legally deny a warranty claim over the use of aftermarket parts, the automaker must be able to prove that the aftermarket part in question was the sole cause of damage to directly related parts, and that had the aftermarket part not been installed, the related parts would not have failed, and that is pretty strong legal protection.

What it means is, you can use any parts you like as long as they do not *damage* the vehicle, that is your right under the law, and it's a good basic set of "fair play rules", as we like to refer to the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act.. Here is a link that will give you some more info too, it's from the SEMA website, of which this website is a member:

Hi skicrave,

No, the computer only needs to come out in these vehicles for the first-time installation, and even then only so you can get good access to the connector where the Superchip attaches, for proper cleaning before attachment of the Superchip.

So once you've installed it for the first time, you can easily remove or replace it in a minute or two, without pulling the computer again. This will vary depending on vehicle type and where and how the computer is mounted of course, but in these 1997 & newer F-trucks, the computer only comes out for the first time installation, because how the computer is mounted in them, you always have access to the rear of it in these late-model Ford trucks.
