PSD Chip Question for Mike
Hi Mike,
After riding in my truck, my dad has decided he needs a chip for his 1996 PSD. Since I know very little about chipping diesels, I went over to Ford-Diesel.com and did a search on chips. Seems that Superchip is real popular over there because it tunes at all throttle positions and provides some serious power.
My questions are, does Superchip make the 50/100 chip for the 96 PSD? And, does he need to do any other upgrades such as a pyro gauge and and exhaust upgrade?
Thanks in advance for the help.

If you're able to get a chip for the 96 and you go with the standard chip (50hp/100torque) then no you do not need do anything to the air intake or exhaust. I have that chip on my PSD and didn't do anything else until a couple of months ago. I added a high flow air filter and gauges (pyro & boost) My truck was just fine without them but I'm pulling a heavy 30' travel trailer and wanted the gauges for my piece of mind.

Your dad will like it to, my dad pulls a larg load he has a 9,000lb 5th-wheel and behind that he pulls a 17.5ft boat about 3,000lb so tell your dad to get the chip putting it in will be a little harder the the f150 took me about 1 hour to do good luck. O-yea I think the price even went down a little but give mike a shoot here is his e-mail address he his very helpfull and know his trucks mtroyer@compuserve.com

Thanks Everybody,
That's what I needed to know.
Mike,
It will be about a week before I have access to his truck to find the code. I'll give you a call when I get it.
Thanks Again

Hi Conocoan,
The first-generation Powerstrokes, which are the 1995-1998 models, pick up just a little bit less than the later intercooled 1999 & up PSD's. Typical gains for the earlier PSD's like your Father's run on the order of 40 hp & 70 lbs./ft. of torque with no other mods than the Superchip.
The "50/100" program for the 1999 & newer PSD's has been upgraded to gain 60-65 hp & 115 lbs./ft. of torque, this happened starting late last summer and continue on thru last Fall.
And no, you don't have to do any other modifications, and he will still have emissions compliance as well.
As usual, we'll simply need his computer code, which can be found on a sticker in the Driver's door frame, near the door hinges. The same place as in the 97 & up F-150's, except on the Driver's side, in other words. If that sticker is missing, then you'll need to go to the computer, which is mounted in a recess in the firewall in that year of PSD, so all you see under the hood is the usually wiring harness with the 10mm bolt head in the center. Just so you'll know, there is another box with a similar wiring harness that looks very similar to the computer mounted on the driver-side fender usually in that year PSD, that is *not* the computer, it has no opening on the back of it.
The computer will be completely recessed back into a "cubbeyhole" on the firwewall, so just look for the wiring harness pointed straight into the firewall.
Let us know if you need any help with locating the code.
