I just installed mine today,
it kicks in very nice and the shifting makes it alot more enjoyable..

it's raining here and I hav'nt nailed it yet,my tires will just spin out..

my install had NO scraping either, no film or plastic coating, just some grease that had to be wiped off the connector!

i would recommend it if you have the same engine as me!

Should i expect more of a power gain from the chip since I already have Flowmaster series 40 exhaust and a k&n fipk.

Hi patrickjp,

Thanks for your post, I'm glad you're enjoying the Superchip!

I do need to point something out to you that is *very* important, if I understand your post correctly, and of course, please correct me if I've assumed something here that isn't accurate about what you've posted on your install.....

Just to let you know, there *is* conformal coating that needs to be removed, whether you scrape it off using the method we describe in our Performance Products documentation, or the method in the manufacturers instructions, it *has* to be removed for reliable operation. Once you remove the obvious dab of lithium grease that is on most 1998 & older Ford computers edge conectors, then there is still the conformal coating, which is clear in color (which is why you may not have noticed it), that *must* be removed. If you don't go back and do that, and then also make sure none of that coating transferred over onto the contacts inside the slot of the Superchip, sooner or later you *will* have a problem with a no-start or a stall, etc. Trust me, you do have a coating on there, and it does have to be removed, there are no exceptions to this, *ever*. You are very lucky that it even started at all without doing that, and I don't want to see you have a problem down the road, so please, pull that computer back out and get that coating off your contacts, there is no chance that you don't have it, they *all* do, in almost 10 years I've never seen one that didn't. The only thing that varies is just how thick it is on there. It sounds to me like the coating on yours is thin, and that you got very lucky, but trust me, you will have a problem sooner or later if you don't go back and remove it.

We did an experiment years ago on a 1991 Mustang GT and a 1994 Explorer, where we did the same thing, installed the Superchip after removing the grease but not the coating from the connector, and both ran fine for about a year, and then within days of each other, both went into limp-home mode, and we have to pull 'em back out and *properly* clean them. Now these were older vehicles that had the old type of conformal coating that was much thinner & harder, and was lacquer-based, I wouldn't even try it as a experiment on a newer vehicle, it's a mess to clean that stuff out of the slot on the Superchip when you install it over that coating.

Installing the Superchip without cleaning that coating voids the warranty, just as it says in both the instructions and on the label that blocks the slot on the Superchip so that you have to remove it before you can install it. That is exactly why we have those instructions and warnings there, because that coating is *always* there, and it *must* be removed, my friend.

I suggest pulling the Superchip off, remove the computer and clean that conformal coating off the contacts of that connector, using the method we describe in our Performance Products documentation. Use good bright light and something that you can use to see the connector with a little bit of magnification, as we suggest in the docs.

Also, after cleaning the coating off the connector, before you put the Superchip back on, you need to look at each of the contacts inside the slot, and make sure to clean out any of the coating that has transferred over. It will look like a white-ish residue, and it's easiest to hold it with the slot pointing down, and using a safety pin to flick that stuff off the contacts inside the slot.

If you want to go over this in detail, please feel free to give us a call, ok? I know you're happy right now, and I'm happy for you, but I sure don't want you to have a problme later on, and you will if this isn't done, I'm sorry.

FLSASH UPDATE: Thanks for calling Patrick, I was glad to get a chance to speak with you about this in detail. From your description of everything in our discussion, it sure seems like you don't have any coating there to remove, I have to say that's a first, never seen one that didn't have that coating on it, so it looks like you got very lucky. From your description of that board, it's rather rough apperarance, etc., there's no telling, but it sure does sound a bit odd. the bottom line is that you're up and running, so that's what counts. Thanks again for calling, I was worried that you might have a problem in the future, so I'm glad we were able to clar that up over the phone.

All the best,

Hi JDm,

If you have a 5-speed manual transmission, then the Superchip can't do anything for your shift characteristics. It's only on the automatics that the Superchip can change the shift characteristics, with a manual you control all that manually of course.

Whether you have a manual or an automatic, the power gains are the same to the engine, and for the 4.2 V-6 that is a maximum of 25 hp & 31 lbs./ft. of torque. As to costs, the Webmaster here has a policy that we not discuss exact pricing issues here on the boards, to keep them free of what is considered blatant commerical content, so please contact us privately via phone or email for those details, we'll be happy to go over that with you, so you can give it some thought. Our contact info is just below, as is the link to our online ordering system here on F-150 Online.

Your question as to how much power the Superchip will add since you have opened up your exhaust is a good one, and what genrally happens with mods like those is that the Superchip adds what it does with or without the opened exhaust. In terms of what to expect your vehicle to actually feel like from installing the Superchip, it's going to feel like you picked up about 10%-12% more motor, is a good way to describe it, as that is basically what the Superchip does, provides a 10%-12% peak horsepower increase.

The Superchip will work *very* well with your FIPK kit and the exhaust mnods, as those 3 areas work together well to conmpliment each other. They don't cancel each other out as some mods can, so changes in those 3 areas, meaning powertrain programming and reducing restriction on both the intake and exhaust side as you have done tend to give cumulative gains.
