Question AIRAID / SUPER CHIP

Hi all! I am not sure where to ask this question but I know I will get some answers here.I have a 93 F-150 with a 125,000 miles on a 351 with an automatic transmision. It looks like AIRRAID does not make a set up for my older pu but K&N does.Is it any good? If I use the K&N and the POWERAID spacers and a SUPER CHIP all together can I expect excellent results? or should I try a differant combination? Thanks in advance-Brad

Thumbs up

Thanks for the info Mike. I for got to say that it is infact a healthy engine and does not use any oil. Also it does not get driven hard. I only drive it about 7000 miles a year due to a company truck. Thank goodness it's a FORD also! You talked about doing some exhaust changes. I have installed a free flowing muffler but that is it. I have considered headers but it seems like a lot of work and cash for what is gained. What did you have in mind? Thanks again-Brad

Hi GTXL,

Yes, you'll like K&N's FIPK kit, and it will do a very nice job of reducing the restriction in the air intake tract of your 351 (5.8). ON vehicles where both Airaid and K&N make airbox elimination kits (such as the '97 & up F-150's), they generally cost the same and deliver virtually identical power gains, so you'll be fine with either brand, they're both good kits that work well.

The Superchip will also work very well on your engine, and of course with the FIPK kit as well, as they are the top 2 best bang-for-the-buck mods for these vehicles, and compliment each other nicely. The Poweraid throttle body spacer has gathered mixed reviews, some people felt they got something from it and others didn't.

The FIPK kit on a healthy 5.8 gives about a 15 hp peak gain, and the Superchip will add about 20 hp & 34 lbs./ft. of torque on the 180 hp version of the 5.8, more if it's the 200 hp version.

As far as answering the question of if it's OK to start adding go-fast parts on an engine with 125,000 miles on it, that depends on which parts & the general health of the engine, and how it's being driven. If it's in good shape, and doesn't use any excessive amounts of oil in between oil changes, then you'll be fine using things like the Superchip, the FIPK kit, the spacer, and even some exhaust changes if you haven't done that already as well.

If you'd like to go over the details on the Superchip, please feel free to give us a call or shoot us an email, and we also have an online ordering system here for your convenience, the link to it is just below as well.

For the other items, they are carried in F-150 Online's own Online Store of course, and Roger Lemere, the gentleman who runs it, will take very good care of you.

Best of luck whatever you decide, & Merry Christmas!

Hi GTXL,

On the exhaust side, we generally prefer to use a good aftermarket cat-back exhaust system (that means replacing everything from just after the catalytic converters on back), as that way you get the benefit of flow-engineering in a complete system.

However, if you are happy with how your truck sounds with the muffler change, then leave it as it is, and go ahead and do your 2 mods, and *then* after you've driven it for awhile, you can decide if you really want to drop the $$$ to do a full cat-back system. They aren't particularly expensive, usually $250-$300 or so for the good ones, it's just that after doing the FIPK & the Superchip, you may decide that you have enough performance, and if so, then you don't need to spend anymore for further exhaust changes.

We like headers, they do work well, but you're right, that is about where the additional power starts to get more expensive. A good set of headers on that motor is going to add about 14-17 more peak hp., but of course they do cost $$$, so you might want to wait a bit on those, and do the other mods first, to decide if at that point you really desire more performance, and are willing to spend the additional $$.
