What are some thoughts and/or opinions on purchasing a used lightning? I will probably get a new one, but I found a used 99 for sale. I'm a little worried it may have been driven very hard and I may have some problems. Just wondering??

Hi Mikey,
Check it out thoroughly. See how many miles are on it, have the Ford dealer run an "OASIS" check on it, which will show any repairs under warranty on the vehicle for the last 6-12 months.
See if the dealer will give you the name & phone number of the previous owner, and see if you can talk to that person.
Some of them *have* been driven very hard, but many of them have been pampered by their owners as well. It may be that it was traded in because whoever owned it couldn't afford it, or any one of a number of reasons, some good, some bad.
Also, you need to check and make sure that it's intercooler has been properly repaired, as most of them leak, and a number of them have had to have their motors replaced from intercooler fluid getting into the combustion chambers, big mess. These 1999 & some 2000 Lightning intercoolers are a known big problem, which Ford is just now supposedly getting properly and permanently "fixed", so they won't crack & leak again in the future. Some owners have had 3 and even 4 different intercoolers. And of course, some owners have had no intercooler problems.
In short, check this thing out from head to toe, service record, previous owner, etc., and if you can't, pass on it, as they are going to continue making them for some time, at least a few more years, and there will always be nice clean Lightnings available in the future, I'm betting.
