Question just waitin on the power?

Got the chip in and it started right up.
My question is when should it start working? I don't notice a difference yet.
Highest octane available in Albuquerque is 91so that can't be helped I guess. I need to change the thermostat back to a
195 too, but I thought there would be "some" immediate difference? I'm also
seriously thinking about removing the hitch to reduce weight, along with any other unused heavy options. Sorry that the
gas tank has to stay,we all know how much our trucks need this one. The Whypertech started (working?) in few miles of driving but detonated so bad that
I had to return it. I was expecting the same engine response with a superchip
(detonating aside) How long do I need to
wait til it starts working?

Did you disconnect the battery before installing your new chip, if you didn't, you need to do it, so the computer gets reprogram with the new chip.

Yep,turned on the lights, too. Should I do it
again just for the off chance it didn't clear?

Cool

Yep,that was it . unhooked it again. Let it
sit with the lights on for 5 minutes. And
the improvement was there!! Much better
than the "Hyper"tech and not a hint of detonation. Can't wait for new plugs and
wires,hotter thermostat,and the access to
93 octane fuel!! Losing the hitch might get my tires howling again. My truck used
to break loose with half pedal,,man those snuglids are heavy. I had the chance to lift it (just from the back)and it
is a pretty substantial hunk of fiberglass,
and steel reinforced to boot. But I have to
carry all my wordly posessions in the bed
so it's a necessity. Thank you ,Mike this
chip is great and it'll only get better with the engine maintenance it badly needs.

Hi Screamer,

Your post is an *excellent* example of what happens when you don't have the computer's memory completely cleared of the old program. Disconnecting the battery is not *required*, and if you don't, it will simply take a few days of driving for teh new program to slowly overwrite what's already in memory in the computer. But to feel the immediate results, you need to disconnect the battery and then drain residual voltage from the system, while the computer is still in the vehicle and connected, so the computer gets a fresh load.

In your last post, where you mention that you left the light on for 5 minutes, that is *exactly* how we do it here, and is what we suggest. Disconnect the battery (with the computer still connected of course!), turn the headlights on for 5 minutes, then turn off the headlights and re-connect the battery, and drive away.

This will clear the computer's memory, due to having the headlights on for long enough to drain all the residual voltage from the systems IC's & caps, so you can get a good fresh program load.

We have to do the same thing anytime we mnake a change to the program, and then go on the dyno to check the results, so we can get an accurate picture of exactly what happens with each change.

Remember that just removing the computer from the vehicle will not clear it's memory, it needs to see that sudden power loss from disconnecting the battery, and then drain of residual power to clear it.

To get the rated power gains from the Superchip requires the use of 92 octane at sea level altitude, so on 91 you're probably making a few hp less than what you'll make on 93, but you're still getting a nice gain that you can obviously feel, so you'll be fine.

Have fun!

Cool

Yep,it's definately working now,but it's still
a little doggy in the daytime hours. My guess is the heat under the hood with the
open element air filter, and 5000 ft.plus altitude is not helping either. When it cools down in the evening,it's go time.
One wierd thing is that it downshifts in
three stages, waa,,waaa, WAAAAA.in OD
Is it going to get more power given some time? or is this pretty much as far as it goes?

Hi Screamer,

"And now, the rest of the story", as Paul Harvey would say.

If you are up at 5000 ft. of elevation, you aren't making anywhere near the power you would at sea level. As a matter of fact, you will lose 3.5% of your power for every 1000 ft. above sea level. So assuming you are exactly 5000 ft. above sea level, this means you have 17.5% less power up there. On a stock 4.6, this means you drop from 220 hp. stock all the way down to just 181.5 hp stock to begin with, a loss of 38.5 horsepower just from your elevation.

With the Superchip, you will still get the same 10%-12% increase in peak horsepower that it delivers on these vehicles, but because you are making less power to start with, instead of getting the full 26 hp & 40 lbs./ft. of torque the 4.6's do at sea level, instead, that same 10%-12% is giving you a gain of about 18-21 hp., just to give you an idea of what you're really getting.

As long as you disconnect the battery as part of your installation of the Superchip as per the instructions, then you will get the vast majority of it's power gains right away, though you may notice that it feels a little bit stronger as you accumulate the next 500 miles or so after installation. Normally you'll see at least 75%-80% of what it's going to do right away, and then the rest tends to come in more gradually, as you accumulate the next 500 miles or so after installation, is how it usually works at sea level. So you may notice that it feels a bit stronger as you put some more miles on it.

Just remember, the Superchip is going to give you a 10%-12% increase in peak horsepower, basically.

Cool

Well, it did seem better the second night
The engine just growls when you punch it
now. The shifting is great! I am having someone at a shop replace my plugs before I drive to Dallas this weekend. After
looking at the difficulty factor,$70 sounds
like a real bargain. Don't get me wrong
here,I've done everything you can do to
a car or truck in the past. But the newness
of this vehicle, and the fact that nearly anything could go wrong, makes me want
an insured business to do it for me.Then I
will have a recourse in case something does happen/stripped threads, dirt in the
cylinders,etc.. etc.... Also,I'm having a hard time finding a thermostat, other than the dealer,to replace the Hypertech 160 deg. item. Any auto parts dealers have them in stock ?
