new to the engine game, help me
hi, i am a 17 yr old kid, i have a 1997 ford f-150 king cab 4.6l v8, i want more performance out of my truck and i am not sure if i want to spend a great amount of money doing that. i have no clue how to start playing with the engine, no clue the prices, no clue what to buy or what it does, i basically know nothing other then i want my truck to go faster then 100mph. so if someone can tell me what to buy, what it does and how much faster will i go, and how much it costs, then you would be doing me a big favor. thanks

if you don't want to spend a ton of money doing modifications to your truck, a few things can be done to increase your performance by not spending alot on 'em.
An Intake System - K&N makes one for the v8 f-150. About $200
A Cat-Back Exhaust System - Flowmaster is a decent muffler in my opinion, especially if you want something loud. ranging from $70-300.
Lastly a performance chip - Talk to Mike Troyer on this board for all the info, he has helped me along with many people on any subject we had questions too. around $200-300.
Get all these and you will definitely see a huge improvement in performance.
Good Luck

Two things if you want to go over 100 mph:
1. Make sure you have tires that are speed rated for over 100 mph (visit www.tirerack.com for speed rating info). I'm sure you can figure out why I'm suggesting this...
2. Get the superchip before the other stuff. It removes the computer's rev limiter, allowing you to as fast as possible.
...but do you really want to go that fast in a truck? (I guess I would have when I was 17, but the best I could do at that time was 85 mph -- no matter what 00 in my '72 Super Beetle.)

Hi Fordteen33,
Welcome to F-150 Online!
The other responses have given you some great ideas and suggestions, the most important of which is PLEASE be very careful driving at high speeds!! As was mentioned, make sure your tires are properly rated for speeds above 100 mph, or you could have a disaster on your hands once the top speed limiter has been removed. Your original tires from the factory are NOT up to these kinds of speeds, so be aware of that!
Your vehicle has a top speed limiter from the factory, as you've no doubt already discovered, which will not let it go above 98-100 mph, though a few can go as high as 108, depending on which tires the vehicle came from the factory with. The TS limiter is set to match the speed rating of the tires, you see.
The top 3 best "bang-for-the-buck" mods on these vehicles are:
1.) Optimize your powertrain programming, using the Superchip, which we carry, and you can contact us for that info, our contact info is below for your convenience. It will add a maximum of 26 more peak horsepower, and 40 lbs./ft. of torque. If it's an automatic, it will also firm up the shift characteristics there as well. The top speed limiter is also removed.
2.) Reduce restriction in the air intake, using one of the airbox elimination kits, like K&N's FIPK kit, or the Airaid brand, either one gives the same power gains, which are 12 hp on the 4.6. That product is available in F-150 Online's store, which you can access by clicking on the link on the left side of your screen that says "Online Store".
3.) Reduce restriction on the exhaust, using a good cat-back exhaust system, you'll pick up about 10-12 hp on the 4.6, and these are also available in the Online Store here.
Though I have listed them in the order of most power gained per dollar spent, you can do these mods in any order you like, and it won't affect the eventual outcome, and that gives you very nice flexibilty in choosing what you want to do first.
One other thing to keep in mind: Police notice loud exhausts too, and particularly young drivers behind the wheel, so you'll want to know that, and drive accordingly!
Best of luck with your truck, and in all you do. We hope you'll hang out with us here when you have time, it's a great place to meet new friends and learn about your F-150.
Be safe, & have fun!

If you still got some questions, the best resource for finding stuff out is here on these boards. Go back a couple of weeks and if you have a question, I'm sure someone had the same one and posted it.
