Question superchip with a jacobs ignition system?

I am planning on adding the Jacobs mileage master ignition system to my '97 F-250 HD 4x4. I have the 460 and I can use all the added mileage I can get. The jacobs system seems perfect. I want to know if it will work with a superchip, which I plan to install next? Do I have to have one of those specially programmed chips because I have an advanced ignition system?

Dear 4X4landscaper,

The Jacob's ignition will work just fine with the Superchip, you won't need a custom program. Doing things like adding a hotter ignition system, wires, plugs, etc. will all work fine with the Superchip. You may find that you'll see better gas mileage with that setup too. And that huge 460 motor can use some help in that regard, that's for sure.

Another point just so you know, in case you ever do a modification that actually does require a custom program, you can always have your Superchip updated thanks to it's flash design. For example, let's say you install the Superchip, and a year later you decide to install a supercharger. You just send your Superchip in, and we update it with the custom program for a small custom programming fee, thus protecting your investment in your Superchip.

Just to give you an idea, here are some of the types of modifications that *require* custom programs: superchargers, nitrous oxide, ported cylinder heads, camshaft changes, etc. In other words, it's usually going to be major mechanical modifications to the engine that actually *require* a custom program.

Things like reducing restriction on the intake side with an airbox elimination kit, like either the Airaid or the K&N FIPK kits, reducing restriction on the exhaust side such as cat-back exhaust systems, usually even headers work just fine with the "standard" Superchip. Each vehicle is programmed according to the software revision that was loaded into it's computer from the factory, so you're already gettting the benefit of a complete workup for *your* individual vehicle, and not a program compromised to run on say, all '97 460 F-250 vehicles like yours. The same identical vehicle can have dozens of different software revisions, or computer codes as we refer to them, so we make a separate program for each one.

Feel free to give us a call for all the specific details, and we also have an online ordering system right here on F150online that you can access either thru our banner ad that runs in rotation at the top of these pages, or by typing in the URL at the bottom of my signature line.

Good luck with your Jacob's ignition installation, and please let us know how you like it!

Cool

FYI, Jacobs electronics has ahd a lot of problems w/quality & warranty service for the past 2 years. Supposidly, they are back up to speed, but after the "Go-A-Round" most of my friends have had (one is still having problems 3 years later they still haven't provided the additional parts required for his application) I don't know of anyone in my neck of Calif. who wants anything to do with Dr. Jacobs.

Just my FYI

I got the Mileage Master for my F150 with the 4.6. Some words of warning.

1. The instructions may not be correct for installation of the system or parts it comes with. I'm trying to get Jacobs to pay for the 2nd installation and regapping of plugs since the instructions were wrong, according to the Tech dept.

2. I was also supposed to get an extra important part that goes with the ignition, but is failed to be mentioned in the instructions.

Other than that it seems to be a quality product from the outside anyway. The power seems to be about midway between stock and the superchip (I had to take the chip out because of a problem, and disconnected the Jacobs ignition). With the ignition connected my truck does seem to run quieter and pulls a little bit better in overdrive than stock. But for $450± plus installation the Superchip is still the better deal for cost per HP. But the advertisement of massive power gains, it depends on what your opinion of what massive is. I got the Superchip back today, so I'll see what difference with the two hooked up will make.

I had the Jacobs kit on my '92 F-150 before I sold it and have one on my 5.0 Mustang now. My experience with them has been great. No problems, better gas mileage and performance. I had trouble with the Mustang once, thought it was the Jacobs coil (turned out to be bad plugs). I sent it back to them and they sent me a new one immediately. I even lost my instruction manual and they sent me a new one at no charge. Yea, the power gains didn't seem to be what their ads say, but I did notice an increase.

Cool

I ordered a Jacobs DIS Milage Master Ignition system with the wires for my truck. I am doing this not so much for the milage, although that would be nice, but in preparation of a Blower installation later this summer. I will do the install myself and let you know how it goes. One thing the Tech dept told me is to not run Bosch 4's with the system. I was told is confuses the computer with the sensing feed back from the plugs. They recommend a plug and I will change from the factory plugs when I do the install. A shift kit will be the next item then the blower!
