Question Reprogrammed PCM

Maybe someone can help with this one! I have a 99 F-150 4.6l auto with computer code 'CFK3'. I also have a 'Ford Authorized Modification' sticker under the hood that says 'Reprogrammed PCM Module #XL3 FXD! I looked at the back of the computer and it has a steel cover vs. a black plastic one, that I have seen in many pics. I would very much like to put a Superchip in my truck, (tranmission shifting sucks, more power, etc...) but what does the 'Reprogrammed PCM' meen?

Dear SoCalRoush,

It means your vehicle's computer has been reprogrammed to a different software revision, and that it is no longer a CFK3. It could well be a CFK4, or a completely different code series. The sticker you found is required by Federal emissions laws, and they are requird to identify the new code. What you have there may be part of that code, but it's not all of it. We can usually identify your new code given your original code and the full & correct info on the new calibration code or Ford part number, they can list either one for the new calibration code.

With regards to the type of cover over the port on the rear of the computer, some have a black or grey plastic tab, and some are metal snapouts, and some are metal doors that are held secure with a screw, so what you've found, the metal type, doesn't mean anything in particular. When the dealer reprograms a computer, all they do is reflash it's internal EEPROM with a different software revision, they don't have to replace the entire computer to do that in 1996 & later FoMoCo vehicles. So they will only replace the ECU (computer) if it's actually failed. When they replace a computer, the new computer will have a sticker on it identifying it's new computer code, and that makers things much easier.

The dealers and Superchips use 2 different methods for identifying the software revision, you see, and that can sometimes complicate things. The information you found on that sticker is not the *complete* new calibration code, it's only part of it, and you need the rest of it. It may be on the RO (Repair Order) paperwork from your service department for that work, so you might want to check that. Another point is that sometimes more than one calibration code can apply to one computer code, though that doesn't make sense, we've seen it happen.

The easiest thing to do is probably just give us a call, and we can go over all this in detail with you, so you can get the info you need to get your Superchip.

Mike, thanks for the lightning quick response! This sticker was on my truck when I purchased it brand new, and I thought nothing of it. I've had problems with this dealer after I purchased my truck and would not like to go back there to get the rest of the info, unless it is necessary! The code behind the black plastic clip on the computer is CKF3 also! Probably means nothing, right? Maybe I should call you tomorrow, about 9am pacific time! The Ford sticker also notes the tire size change, to 295/45ZR18! Could Roush have reflashed the computer?
