Post Chip Comparison Question

I have a 1995 F150 351 E4OD used for towing a 28FT travel trailer. Has anyone had any experience with a chip from Dynosources? They claim around 25 hp gain with no requirement to use high octane fuel!! How does this chip comapre with the SuperChip

Dear MikeC,

I do not have any direct experience with this Dynosources chip.

The next thing I have to say is that simply cannot happen. There is *no* way to get that kind of power gain from programming alone without going to premium gasoline, and programming specifically for it. If it were possible, the automaker would have done it. The automakers will leave a *few* horsepower on the table, so to speak, with regular fuel, but *very* few. 25 just isn't possible.

Just to give you an idea, the Superchip application for the 351 engine that gains the most power is for the first-generation 93-95 Lightning, which used GT-40 cylinder heads. On that vehicle, we gained 25 horsepower and 40 lbs./ft. of torque. If it were possible to gain 25 hp using regular gas, then it would be possible to get a *lot* more using premium gas, say 40 hp or more. However, it simply is not.

Now of course since we are the National Distributor of Superchips, my opinion is quite obviously going to be a bit biased, and I tell you that right up front. However, I can tell you with complete confidence that it simply is not possible to gain 25 hp by reprogramming that vehicle and running it on regular gasoline, that will *never* happen. The factory programming is conservative, in that that vehicle was programmed by the factory for the use of fuel as low as 85 octane, so you can pick up *maybe* a handful of horses by reprogramming for 87, but that's it. There is simply no way anyone is ever going to program that vehicle for regular gas, and increase it's peak horsepower by 25 in the process. You *can* see that type of gain, or very close to it, using premium gasoline with the Superchip, but not with regular gas.

Some chipmakers will distort their gain claims by claiming that they have increased engine power in a certain area, when in fact all they did was to restore the torque lost when the torque converter locks up prematurely when accelerating hard. An excellent example of this is in the 97 & later V-8 F-150 automatics. In second gear, at anywhere from 3000-3500 rpm, the torque converter locks up, and torque drops by right at 100 lbs./ft.! The Superchip restores the power that the factory program basically "robbed", be delaying the onset of torque converter lockup in second gear when you are at full-throttle only. So we restore that lost 100 lbs./ft. of torque, but we do *not* actually add 100 lbs./ft. of torque to the engine's actual output, nor do we advertise it as such. I don't know if perhaps something like that is going on with this chip you're talking about. But I can tell you that engine power in your vehicle cannot be increased by 25 or even 20 horsepower by reprogramming it for regular gasoline, or even a mid-grade like 89, it just isn't possible.

Please feel free to give us a call if you'd like to discuss this in detail, without a sales pitch.

And best of luck with your truck!

Hi Mike,

We are in Millboro, which is in Bath County, right on the border with West Virginia. So it's probably still a good ways away from you, several hundred miles at least I'm guessing.

Feel free to give us a call anytime at your convenience. Our hours are M-F 10-7, Eastern.
