Hi SpaceAce!

MER3 is the most common of all the MER codes by far. I don't even think they actually released MER1&2 at all. Unless there is a specific reason for it, they will not do another program in that series, as it was only used for a very limited vehicle range, and with only one engine, in the F-250SD. Even if Ford releases an MER4, there is no reason to use it, unless it fixes a specific "problem" of some sort, as it will not affect power levels. So it's entirely possible in this case that this year & specific vehicle configuration only got that one code, MER3, it happens!

Good luck!

Thanks Mike !

I've been looking for the mileage that others "claim" to be getting with a comperable truck.

Your mileage seems to be really low. I have '99 crewcab, 5.4L and 3.73 gears and average 14 around town and depending on terrain, 16 to 17 on the highway. Am looking at adding a chip just for the extra horsepower as '99 was only rated at 235. In everything I have read, horsepower and torque are the only promised advantages, but in talking to others that have added a chip, miles per gallon have improved some. "

I can't tell what's to be expected. I know reality and it ain't near this.

Spaceace,
I never got close to that with or without the chip. I usually got 12-13 with the chip and 11-12 without it. Before I did anything to my truck(lift,35inch tires) the best I got was 14 on one straight trip. I do have 4.10 gears so maybe thats why, but I don't know.

Dear Spaceace,

The F-250's with the 5.4 are generally only getting 9-10 mpg stock, and I have a *lot* of them for customers. They tend to go up to 12-13 with the Superchip, which is not a big gain in numbers, but it's a huge improvement in terms of percentage increase, so they tend to pay for themselves very quickly on those 5.4 F-250's & 350's. The vehicles I'm talking about generally have 3.73 to 4.10 gearing, and they are the Super Duty trucks. I have yet to see a stock SD 5.4 get anything more than 12-13 honest mpg, so I don't think 15 mpg will *ever* be seen on that vehicle in a stock configuration.

The F-150's get much better gas mileage than those 250's & 350's do with the same basic engine.

Feel free to give me a call if you want to talk about really optimizing your gas mileage on that vehicle to it's fullest. You probably already know all that anyway, but call if you like. Everything from tire pressure to oil viscosity affects gas mileage, so there are further improvements that can be made; whether they will be cost-effective or not is the question.

I was on your home page about bad fuel mileage on the F-150. I have a 97 F-150 Supercab 4X4. I have found that when I change my oil, I add Justice Brothers Oil Treatment with Metal Conditioner and I get about 35 to 40 miles more to a tank of fuel. I also have a friend with a 98 F-150 and by using this additive he had approximately the same results. (I have not tried this with any other oil treatments). I am not indorsing
Justice Brothers; however, it works for me.
