Question performance increase question

My truck was at the dealergetting a pitman arm installed and they gave me a 99' f150 4x4 s/c 5.4L auto...as a loaner. Boy I wish they didn't do that...the 5.4L is much peppier than my 4.6L.

Now the question.....Will a superchip bring my performance to the level of a stock 5.4L?

The Superchip will add 26 hp to your 4.6, which if memory serves is 220 hp stock, for a new total of 246 hp. That will still be below the hp rating of the 1999 5.4 V-8 which you just drove, which is 260 hp., but above the 5.4 rating for 97 & 98, which was 235 hp.

(I think)

Mike, isnt that 26hp rear wheel, and you get like 40 at the flywheel, which will put him up to a 5.4l?

I think it's 26 at the flywheel.

Thumbs up

Don't forget the 5.4L has 345lbs of torque.
If I remember correctly the 4.6L is under 300.
The high torque is what gives you the low rpm pep.
I rarely exceed 2500RPM in normal daily driving and I still am going faster than most cars.
Not to say if someone in a Dodge or Chevy pulls up revving the engine my RPMs tend to go over the 2500 mark considerably when the light turns green.(Isn't that the whole point of a 5.4L?)
Wife even gets ticked when I go over 3000RPM and accuses me of "gunning it" because it takes off so quick.
You will also notice the performace mods are more prevelant on the 4.6L than 5.4L.

Dear Darren,

To get an *honest* 50 hp gain, here's the formula:

1.) Superchip - 26 hp.
2.) Cat-back exhaust - 10-17 hp
3.) Airaid kit from F150online store - 10-12 hp.

Those 3 mods will cost approximately $700, and these 3 areas are the most cost-effective areas to modify not only in the F-150, but in most computer controlled vehicles. They will get you an easy and honest 50 or more horsepower from your 4.6, and a little bit more on the 5.4, for you lurkers out there. You can do these mods in any order you like, most people tend to do their mods one thing at a time, due to both budget considerations as well as wanting to be able to feel exactly what each change has done for the vehicle's performance.

For cat-back exhaust systems I recommend Jardine, they make the most power and have a great tone, and, they cost the same as my #2 choice, which is Gibson, figure about $300 for either cat-back system, Jardine or Gibson. Gibson is easier to find, Jardine is out of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Their cat-back system gives about 3 hp more than anyone else's. And then for the intake, I recommend using the Airaid kit available right here on the F150online store at a great price. And of course the Superchip you can order from us, and get our F150online discount. You can contact us privately for ordering info on the Superchip, or contact info is below for your convenience, in our signature line.

By the way, this is where most people stop with these expensive vehicles, most of which are still under warranty. If you get these 3 things done and still want more, there are plenty of other things to attack, they just don't get as much bang-for-the-buck as the first 3 areas we suggest you modify to get your target goal of a 50 hp increase.

Good luck,

Question

Hey Mike,
I didn't see Jardine mentioned in the Exaust board. Where do I find out more about them? How is the durability? Stainless?

Jardine is located in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. You can find them on the Internet, check a few search engines. Sorry I don't have a URL for you!

If you're going to spend $700 for the modifications listed above by Mike, then why not just opt for the 5.4 which is a little less than that and you don't have to run premium fuel and feel it every time you fill up?

54regcab,

I was wondering why Ford just doesnt make the 4.6l standard for 4x4. That v6 must be working too hard to move that supercab/4x4.
