Thumbs up Effect on Emissions

I would like to do a Super chip on my 99 SC 4.6 but I live in a nonattainment area. This mean the state checks our vehicle's emissions prior to licensing every other year. Will the chip adversely effect the emissions? Logic says that if gas mileage is up then emissions probably down.

BTW what about emission effects from other HP adders. ie K&N, Exhaust mods etc.

Dear Tiger,

The Superchip will pass any emissions inspection/test in any state. And you're correct, most vehicles tend to run a bit cleaner with the Superchip. Just so you know, (a lot of people ask this question) today's new vehicles are generally considerably below their emissions standards for each model year, especially in the 90's. (This excludes Honda, who got hit a year or two ago with the largest fine ever for an emissions violation by an automaker)

So if you have to have a tailpipe sniff test, or even the EPA drive cycle, the Superchip will pass with flying colors.

Things like K&N air filters will pass emissions, and adding headers shouldn't cause any problems either. If you do add headers, I would highly recommend that you have them Jet-Hot coated (it's a ceramic coating inside and out), as this helps to retain heat in the exhaust flow, instead of escaping from the headers themselves. the headers stay nice and cool, and underhood components get much less heat as a result.

Doing basic exhaust changes, such as a cat-back system, or even just replacing the mufflers, shouldn't have any effect on emissions. Just leave those catalytic converters in place!

Best of luck,

Thanks Mike I figured it must be a relatively common question. I'll get back to you when I get my code from my vehicle and am ready to make the change.

Just to verify Mike's reply, I had my 99.5 Lightning tested here in Atlanta just after installing my superchip. Atlanta is within a very strict emissions testing area and is fairly close to CA standards.

It passed with flying colors. Also runs a heck of a lot better.

Mike,

You certainly get a lot of kudos for the chip on this board. Sounds great. Is there a way to tell from the code if my computer will require the jumper mods? My code is YBQ3. Just want to know as it sounds like I may be able to handle it myself. I'm and Electrical Engineer. (Which means I know just enough to get into trouble but not enough to get out.)
Thanks again in advance.
