PP3 87 Octane Program

How much difference does the 87 octane program make compared to stock?

Hi Terry,

Norm's helpful advice is right on the money (as usual) - just plug it back in and follow the prompts, making sure you have first disabled the fuel system as the manual describes.

Enjoy!

Hi Wiggles,

That depends on which engine you have, but is generally in the range of about 8 HP at the wheels on the 4.6 & 5.4 V8 engines - and 10-12 HP on the V10's.

Even though the raw power gain is relatively small on 87 octane, the performance will still be improved further because of all the other changes to optimize the many different & various delays, retards, etc., and this will make the powertrain much more responsive to driver input overall.

Question Superchips Microtuner Tradeup?

Hey Mike,

I bought my Microtuner from you about a year ago. At the time there was only the Hi Octane performace program available. Now I see that both 87 and 91 octane programs are in the tuner. Can I trade up or would have to buy a new one and just have to keep the old unit still?

Hi Douga54,

Yes, you're absolutely right - the new 1715 just started shipping on September 15th, and now has 3 programs - 87 octane tow-safe, premium gas tow-safe (which is the program your current unit has), and then the "max" performance tune for premium gas that you cannot do *any* towing with.

Your best bet financially is to list your current unit for sale here in the Classified Ads section - it's free & there are lots of people constantly searching for bargains there. That's how you'll get the most out of it, then you can use those proceeds to offset the cost of the new generation 1715. We can offer you a small trade-in value, but you need to know that it won't be as much as you can get for it by selling it outright - if you'd like to explore that option, just give us a call.

There is no way to somehow convert or upgrade the previous generation units into the new unit, as they have different circuitry inside, denser memory chips, etc. In other words, it's not like we could just do a software upload & update the unit to make it have the new units programs.

The new 1715 still has the same performance program your unit does, we call it the premium gas tow-safe program. The difference is that it now also has a program for 87 octane (with a significantly lower power gain of course), and then the new "max" performance tune that you cannot tow with. There are no other differences or capabilities in the "new" 1715 over what yours has, it's the 2 additional programs - only you can decide if having those 2 additional programs is important enough to you to sell or trade in your present unit & get into the new one, of course - anyway, that's the differences, those 2 additional programs, so you can give that some thought & see if you feel you want to have those additional programs.

Nice to see you again & talk to you soon!

selling tuner

Mike...am I not understanding the tuners setup correctly or what? From the literature that comes with the tuner it states that once the tuner is used it is VIN locked. How would one sell a used tuner then for anything other than a problem code tool? Am I missing something? Is there a way to delete the original stock program and in essence give yourself the ability to use it again on another vehicle? I just put the 1715 to good use on '03 FX4 Screw with 6.5k miles, Magnaflow cat back, P295/75/16 Nitto terra grapplers (32.5"tall) and the results were immediately noticed! Fantastic piece of hardware/software.

thanks,

Mark Oltman

As the seller of a tuner unit you would take your truck programming back to stock which is stored in the programmer. This will 'unlock' the programmer and then the purchaser of the tuner could then use it on their truck.

Hi Mark,

"rksylves" response is correct - all you need to do is to return the vehicle back to it's stock program with the Micro Tuner, and then that same Micro Tuner can be used again to tune any other vehicle that it works on - and that can be done an unlimited number of times, the only limitation is that you can use the MT to actually tune only 1 vehicle **at the same time**.

When you plug the MT back in to return to stock, that "unlocks" it from your vehicle's VIN number, so it can then be used to tune another vehicle - very easy!

New Microtuner 1715

Mike,

Thanks for your earlier reply. What kind of horsepowere gains could I expect from the max performance program over the "tow-safe" performance program in the new Superchips Microtuner?
