Chip development for the 5.4L 3V engine?

Are there any chips for the new 04 F-150?
What kind of power gains am I looking at with the chip?

Ohhh ayh any links would be great.

Hi 04,

Nobody that I know of has a proper performance powertrain program already done & on the market for the 3-valve 5.4 2004 F-150's yet that is worth having. So I don't think anybody is going to be able to tell you any specific power gains, etc. - it's just too early in the game, and the 2004 F-150's are not rolling out very quickly - in fact, this is about the slowest new model rollout I've ever seen.

In the 2004 F-150 we not only have an all-new PCM to control the powertrain that has to be R&D'd, but we also have a new engine - the 3-valve 5.4's valve timing is now controlled by the PCM, so all that has to be R&D'd as well - and then there's the new 4R75W automatic transmission, too.

So there is quite a bit that is new on the 2004 F-150 that requires far more R&D than it took to get from 1997 to 1998, or 98 to 99, and so on, up thru 2003 - each new model year from 97 to 03 was able to be done pretty quickly once the '97's were done, as the changes were relatively minor each model year up thru 03. But that's not the case with the 2004 F-150, there's a *lot* that is all new about that vehicle, thus significant new scratch R&D has to be done - just like we had to do with the then-new 1997 F-150, back when the Mod motors were first introduced to the 1/2 ton platform.

We're currently estimating shipping the Superchips applications for the 2004 F-150's roughly the end of December/first of January - we'll probably make some kind of announcement at SEMA with regard to both the 2004 F-150 and the 2004 6.0 PSD engines.

I would suggest to hang in there & not be in a rush to get the very first thing out - you're better off waiting a little while & getting the *best*, and your wait won't be long - the 2004 F-150's development is already scheduled, etc., and we're already able to reprogram the new Ptech PCM's, etc. it's just going to be a little while before we actually ship a thorough replacement powertrain program for the '04 3-valve 5.4 due to the R&D needed in this all-new model.

As soon as we ship, we'll be making the announcement right here, and we'll also have it on our web site at www.TroyerPerformance.com

The new 3-valve 5.4 is still tuned for the use of 87 octane from the factory of course, and so if it responds as the 2-valve 5.4's traditionally have, we should hopefully be able to see our normal 20+ HP gains - but we don't know at this point if we're going to be able to make additional gains by optimizing the variable valve timing in the PCM, or just what's going to happen there - only time will tell for sure, but we're guessing at this point that we should be able to see 20+ HP gains. Given that the engine is still tuned for low-grade fuel, this shouldn't be a problem, but we don't know at this point if we'll make 19 HP or if there is the potential to maybe make say, 31 HP perhaps, as it's just too early.

Best of luck with your new 2004 F-150, we've ordered a 2004 SuperCrew & are still waiting on it ourselves!

Have fun & talk to you soon,

Thanks for the heads up.

yah I figured it would be a lil while before anything of true promise was to come out seeing as how its a brand new truck. Maybe for now Ill just go with an exhaust and intake.

On a side note while cant I just leave any of my vechiles stock?
the bike is practically a race bike.
The daily commuter is not so commuter friendly either.
And now this truck....

When will the madness ever end??? Ohh yah when I get married.

Hi 04,

Well, hopefully even after you're married you should be able to continue the madness - at least somewhat.

Air Force One will soon be shipping their intake system for the 2004 F-150, and Magnaflow is working on their upcoming new line of exhaust systems for the 2004's as well.

Speaking of "the madness" - For some of us, the difference is once you're married you may actually start to accumulate a few things - besides fast vehicles, that is.

Have fun always,

(snipped the rest of your message). Thanks for the information. Very interesting. I am interested in possibly doing a chip mod and Magnaflow exhaust on my new '04 FX4 SCrew. I'll keep what you wrote up in mind. Thanks!

Hi Michael,

Ahh, so you have a 2004 SuperCrew FX4, eh? Wonderful truck! For 2004, as I understand it, only the FX4 and Lariat models can even get the center console w/shifter, etc. - I think the '04 FX4 & Lariat's use the same basic center console arrangement, we like ours a lot - great interior.

The 2004 SuperCrews are still in short supply in many parts of the country, as the SuperCrew represents close to half of all F-150 sales by the 2003 model year, from what figures I've seen - and that's a bunch. That coupled with the fact that for some time (and maybe even still now, I don't know), only the Kansas City plant was building SuperCrews, while the other plants build the standard & extended cab versions.

At any rate, congrats on having a 2004 FX4, that's *quite* the truck!

You, just like us and like most other 2004 F-150 owners, are just dying for performance parts to be R&D'd and released for the 2004 F-150's - and it's going to be a little while, a few months before we start seeing the normal bolt-ons become readily available, such as our new Micro Tuner, the AF1 intake, Magnaflow's new exhaust systems, etc., etc.

If it might be helpful to you, please feel free to shoot us an email to: sales@troyerperformance.com - we'll put you on our email list where we're letting 2004 owners know about each new performance part that we feel is worthwhile for these new trucks, as each is released.

The things you want (powertrain programming & exhaust) are among the most common mods people want to do, and particularly in the case of the tuning, are taking significant scratch R&D we didn't have to do say, from 1999 to 2000, or 2002 to 2003, and so on - so much is new about the 2004's. As I mentioned in a couple other posts in this same thread, the tuning R&D will take some time due to the all-new powertrain mgmt. system being used for 2004 in the F-150, as well as all the other changes - the variable cam timing in the 3-valve 5.4, the transmission changes (4R75), and on and on - so it'll be a few months before most of the more common bolt-ons start shipping.

We had to deal with this same situation back when Ford did the last redesign of the F-150, which was for the 1997 model year - so it will take a little time, but it will be well worth the wait.

Shoot us an email if you'd like to be notified of new 2004 F-150 performance goodies, & best of luck with your new FX4!
