Question Octane Booster and Superchip

I have a FlipChip and have been running it on the 87 octane setting for quite a while now since gas prices are so high.

Would there be a problem in upping the 87 octane by adding some octane booster and flipping that chip to the 93 octane setting?

As always...all advice is greatly appreciated

Scott

Hi Scott,

This is a question that comes up rather frequently, just about every time that gas prices go up a bit we see this subject come up.

The answer is very simnple...............

Never use any kind of octane booster unless your *ONLY* other choice is walking, literally. End of story.

That is what we recommend.

Why? Because most octane boosters leave behind pink, red & purple-ish deposits on the spark plugs & O2 sensors, which can cause either a rich or lean (usually lean) drift, the last thing you want.

And with *any* octane booster, you would have to use so much octane booster to actually raise 87 octane gasoline up high enough that you'd actually spend less buying properly formulated premium gasoline straight from the pump. Forget the labels claiming that $5 bottle of octane booster will turn 20 gallons of 87 into 20 gallons of at least 91 octane fuel - that simply won't happen, as it takes a *lot* more octane booster than just 1 16 or 28 oz. can to raise 20 gallons of 87 octane fuel up 4 whole points - let alone trying to raise it 6 points to get to 93!

Last, there's the issue of the resultant fuel formulation - you'd be better off dumping straight toluene in your tank than any octane booster - premium gasoline is over 40% toluene by volume already.

The bottom line is, to use the Superchips tuning for premium gasoline you need to use properly formulated premium gasoline. Do that at the pump, you'll pay less and get a better result - and not have to worry about replacing spark plugs & O2 sensors more frequently due to the octane booster.

Have fun,

Hi Scott,

You're very welcome, as always.

I just took a gander at your signature line, you've selected some *very* nice upgrades to that truck - looks like just about everything you have done, you've done first-class - congrats!
