High miles & chip... ?

Just curious how many miles would you guys say is too many miles to consider a chip. A buddy of mine recently bought a '93 SW 302, auto. Truck was dirty as #*!!, but seems to be in really good mechanical condition. It was a one owner semi-farm truck... I think it has around 120k miles, but can't remember right now... We've been looking at doing some minor performance mods to it, and since I just got my chip (STILL HAVEN'T HAD TIME TO INSTALL IT. REALLY HOPING THE LITTLE LADY WILL GIVE ME A CHANCE THIS EVENING!) I was just curious what one might do for him...

Relax audiophiles, he just ordered a new Kenwood HU, and I'm going to put in a set of Boston componants I have sitting around... Then I might be able to talk him into pulling the Kicker 12" out of his '78 F100... So, we got the priorities straight.

I wouldn't consider 120k to be high miles. I would be concerned about overall condition of truck (engine, tranny, body). Then I would want to have an idea of how long I was going to keep the truck. I mean if the tranny needs a rebuild in six months, are you going to fix it of get rid of it.

I personally would (Super)chip it if I was going to keep it for at least 1-2 years.

Really you have to have the big plan before you do anything -- how long are you going to keep it, and is this the daily driver or a five days per month extra ride?

I wouldnt worry, I have an 85 GT. When it had just over 100K on it I decided to "soup it up". Other than the GT40 heads that had 25K on them at the time, I did quite a few mods to it and it now has 179K on it and still going strong!

Alrighty, well, it's going to be a daily drive for now. At least until we get the 302 put back in his '78, or a new head gasket on the 351 that's in there now. Then the '78 may become the daily driver again while the 93 becomes the toy. I'm trying to talk him into building the #*!! out of the 93, and taking the '78 back completely original... which would basically just be put the 302 back, and put the steelies back on... He even has the window sticker...

Thanks for the advice...

Hi Closer9,

As long as the motor is basically healthy, not using a lot of oil, etc., you can install the Superchip.

I would simply remember one thing, don't suddenly start driving a 100K+ mile 302 motor like it's a race car, as it may not hold up very long if you do. Then again, we hear so many reports of people putting a blower on at 100K+ miles & going drag racing with the motor running strong for another 75K miles, so you never know.

Just make sure it's "basically healthy," and you should be OK.
