Don't know what to think...
Recently bought the stage 1 kit from troyer(AF1, SC tuner, 15609 MF) and noticed a drop in low end power. I pull a 24 ft. Terry Lite trailer and can barely take off from a stop light without having to put my foot on the floor. If Im on a slight grade it sometimes seems as though it won't take off at all. I worry that if I get on a steep enough grade at a light I won't go anywhere. Top end is different though. Lots of power on the interstate even when going up rolling hills and such. Anyone had a similar experience? What is causing such a loss in low end power? I'm running a 2003 Supercrew FX4 with 5.4 liter. I drove the truck around for a while after each component was installed and noticed when I put the AF1 on the truck seemed to bog at low speeds but did good once the RPM's got up. Anyone?

Sometimes low end loss is from not enough back pressure in the exhaust....
let us know what it turns out to be. |
yeah that's what I'm thinking.

Somtehing else to think about. I have the "big 3" mods and mine runs great!!! Except........when the heat is way up there. Today for example it's low 100's and after sitting at a light for a few minutes, I'm having a hard time geting her moving (had the boat today). Once I get moving and the heat is reduced under the hood she runs much better. In lower heat, maybe low 90's or less, it runs fins. I actually surprise people as I will keep up with traffic taking off with over 7000# behind me.
I notice you're in AZ. We're hot here, but I'm not going to complain one bit knowing where you're from. :D There are a few TSB's about the issue (power loss in the heat) and I understand there could be an ECM flash they are doing to correct it now. (has to do with pulling too much timing in high heat). I haven't looked into it yet but I hate the thought of pulling the chip for a reflash of the ECM then possiibly not being able to run this chip, and I'm not sure about a programmer. Guess it depends on what the flash does. My chip hasn't moved since installation about 2 years ago!! |
Hi wyran,
I have to agree with Family Ride, a familiar fellow around here & has been doing heavy towing with his Expy for years, reporting back his results on his modifications here with excellently detailed posts, those parts didn't cause any loss of low-end torque. We have hundreds of customers of ours using those exact parts, many of whom are also doing heavy towing; none of them has ever made any such claim or report to us about our Stage 1 kit. Those parts do not cause any loss of torque or horsepower anywhere, at any rpm, or any any throttle position. We tested so very thoroughly for this, it took us 23 months to test all the various "name brand" intake kits & cat-back exhaust systems for the F-150 platform, painstaking work on eddy-current dynos to get the part-throttle results, etc. to determine just whose parts were really dong the best job, logging IAT's versus various material used for air handling tube construction, etc. Then all the time spent on the tuning as we help to develop & test many of the Superchips programs that are available for these vehicles. The result of all of that is our Stage 1 kit & the exact manufacturers components that we use, and there is no loss of torque or horsepower *anywhere* as a result of that kit. Contrary to what one posted, the Magnaflow exhaust didn't cost him one *iota* of torque on the low end. Nor is it true that reducing backpressure reduces torque, that's a common myth repeated everyday by so many people who mean well & are trying to help. They hear someone else say it somewhere on a message board and then start repeating it themselves, so it gets continually repeated & eventually people begin to accept it as fact, but it's not. It's a loss of exhaust gas *velocity* that causes a loss of torque in this regard, not backpressure, something that most exhaust system manufacturers choose to ignore (heck, some don't even know) in their efforts to bring ever-cheaper systems to market. There *are* a couple of things I would suggest that you look at however wryan, that I think will help this, so I'd suggest giving us a call when you get a chance so I can go over a few things in some detail with you. Talk to you soon! :) |
Actually I was in New Mexico at the time I noticed the problem. Its a small town in the southwestern part of the state sitting at 6000 ft. and the temperature was 87 degrees.
Mike, I will call on Monday. Thanks |
