4.2 Superchip

well im in the process of purchassing a used Superchip Flip Chip the person im buying it from has these letters and numbers ("FMY2"), i really dont know what they mean, but its for a 4.2 so it must work for me since Superchips chip is from a 1997-2003. i got a 4.2 auto and he has a 4.2 manual. his truck is a 2000 and mine a 2001 im guessing it can be reprogrammed for me. any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Hi SVTErick,

Sure, we can help you with this, no problem! Please give us a call when you get a chance, our phone number is listed just below for your convenience.

The "FMY2" is the computer code that chip was originally programmed for, and until it is reprogrammed, it will *only* work on another FMY2 vehicle. Even the exact same identical vehicle can have many different computer codes throughout the course of just 1 model year, and we program to each individual vehicle's specific code. This is why you can't just put that chip on your vehicle and have it work right away, it has to be reprogrammed for *your* vehicle's exact computer code and then you can use it.

To find your vehicle's computer code, go to the passenger side of the vehicle, open the front door, and then look in the front part of the doorframe, in the area of the door hinges. There in that general area, you should find a small sticker that has 3 letters followed by 1 number on it, and that is your truck's computer code. We'll need that info to be able to reprogram it properly for your vehicle. If you have any problems finding your computer code, we can coach you thru that over the phone, no problem.

Call us when you get a chance & we'll take care of this for you ASAP!

Hi SVT,

A typical air intake kit & a cat-back exhaust system do not require custom tuning in the F-150 platform vehicles, so you;re fine there. This allows those who want to do things in order of bang for the buck start off with the Superchip, and then go on to do an intake, a cat-back exhaust, underdrive pulleys, an electric fan kit, larger throttle body, etc.

You need custom tuning in these vehicles when changing things like a larger MAF (mass airflow meter), larger fuel injectors, adding a supercharger, etc., the more involved mods.
With the Transgo shift kit, just make sure that you do not install it any higher than it's second level (I think it's called "Street/Strip"), that shift kit has 3 "levels" of firmness you can install it at. Don't go beyond the second level, and you generally won't need any custom tuning in the Superchip for that, either.

Good luck & talk to you soon!

Hi SVT,

"Stage 2" is fine for the shift kit, excellent.

From the sound of it, I think you've already got everything you need & you've obviously made some great choices in your mods. Just for future reference in case you may not be aware, here at Performance Products/Troyer Performance, we specialize in F-truck platform performance & carry everything performance-oriented for these vehicles from engine to tailpipe, transmission, you name it; if it makes these vehicles go faster, we do it. Many people still think of us only as tuners, but we do everything from air filters to superchargers, and everything in between.

You can take a look at our web site (it's back up as of today, with most of the parts & detailed descriptions already recovered & displaying correctly while we continue to rebuild the rest of the product database) if you like, it's over at www.TroyerPerformance.com

By the way, it's very nice to see you taking care of your tranny with an auxiliary cooler, that's one area a lot of people don't give thought to, unfortunately, and heat is the #1 enemy of any automatic transmission, of course. That's one of the things we "harp" about a lot & suggest for *all* automatic transmission vehicles, as even the factory auxiliary coolers that come with towing & heavy-duty cooling packages don't do the job in all conditions. We use active fan-powered remote stacked-plate coolers with automatic in-line thermostatic control of the fan. It kicks on at 180, off at 170, and once installed you can forget about it. It can be mounted anywhere since it's a true remote cooler & thus supplies it's own airflow.

Good luck with your gears, cooler, etc., & talk to you soon!
