chip vs tunner

I posted a while back asking about what a chip would do for me. Now on to my next question. What is the difference in a chip and a tuner? Which is better? In just about every magazine there is an ad for these micro tuner deals that say they allow you to adjust your shifting points, shift firmness, read diagnostic codes, adjust speedos, all in addition to like 25hp gains and 50 tq. So teach me. Oh yeah, reason I have all these question is I live in FL and I make a living off of tourists, which means here pretty soon I'll have money and my truck will have new toys. Thanks for all the answers, I know I have loads of questions, but that's what all of you are here for.

The only difference that I am aware of between the Superchips chip and the Superchips Tuner is that the Tuner allows you to adjust for transmission shift firmness as well as adjust for different size tires (to keep the speedometer accurate).

The Tuner saves your stock program and then rewrites the existing chip with the Superchips program, allowing you to go back to the stock program at will.

Call Mike if you have any questions...he is the Superchips distributor. www.troyerperformance.com

Hi 97,

You can very easily access literally *thousands* of posts containing that exact information by using the excellent search feature here. Things that are basic like that you'll want to use the search feature for, as those kinds of things have been discussed in great detail many times as new people join us here every day and asks the same questions etc., so there's tons of great info already posted. The search feature is your key to accessing all of the information contained here, and the icon to access it is in the upper right area of your screen, you'll love it!

You've already got all the basics from what you've already been reading, it looks like.

The Micro Tuner isn't going to give your vehicle any more performance gain than what the traditional Superchip module already does, as you get the same tuning in either part. So going with the Micro Tuner is a matter of it's additional features, such as it's easier to install and has the additional features you listed. Which are the ability to adjust WOT upshift points and shift firmness levels in automatics, the ability to read and clear OBD-II DTC's (OBD-II Diagnostic Trouble Codes), and for 1999 & newer vehicles, the ability to recalibrate the speedometer for changes in tire size & gear ratio.

Now since you have a 1997 model, the speedometer calibration feature doesn't apply to you, so for you using the Superchips Micro Tuner over the Superchip module it would be a matter of the Micro Tuner being a simple plug-in 10 minute installation versus taking about 30 minutes to install the Superchip, and then if you have an automatic, the ability to adjust shift points in automatics (which really doesn't matter unless you have made changes to tire size or gear ratio, as we've already optimized the WOT upshift points in the Superchip), and having the built-in OBD-II code scanner, which for a lot of people is a nice feature and is worth an easy $150 alone.

With the Micro Tuner you don't have to remove your PCM to disassemble it and clean it's connector, you just plug the Micro Tuner in and then follow the instructions, and in 10 minutes you've uploaded the performance tuning via the OBD-II port inside the cabin. And it stores your factory program so you can go back to stock anytime without leaving any tell-tale traces behind. So for some people, that alone makes them want to use the Micro Tuner.

Those are the basic differences between the 2 products, the additional features of the Micro Tuner and it's ease of installation. If you'd like to go over this in more detail, give us a call at our number listed below & we'll be happy to.

You can also read more about each product at our web site, over at http://www.TroyerPerformance.com - click on "Shop" once the home page loads, and then go into the Superchips section, looking under FoMoCo vehicles and you can read in detail about each product.

Good luck with your tourist season & talk to you soon!
