Question SuperChip Jumper

Hello all

I was just wondering. I ordered a superchip for my 99 f150 with a 4.6, auto, 4x4, and when i got it i installed it and no fire. So i called the tech suport and they said that i need to ship them my ecu and they had to put a jumper in it My ecu code is ZJP3. My qustion is what is the jumper and why Ford made it so that i had to have the jumper installed thanks for any imput. also what do octain boosters do and if add them to 87octan what have i changed Thanks agin.

It's really too involved to go into all of that in proper detail, it would take at least a half-hour to type it all out. But you can easily access all of that information just by using the search feature!

If you will use the search feature (in the top right area of your screen here) that is available here for this exact purpose, you can find all of info we've posted over the past 3-4 years about the jumper issue, which affects a small number of '99 F-150's. You can also use it to see everything we've posted about the use of octane boosters (don't use them!) as well. The search function is your key to immediate access of all the info already posted here on F-150 Online, you'll love it! Just about anything you can ask has already been asked and answered hundreds, if not thousands of times, so using the search feature is by far the best way to access info here, and it's an *immediate* result too, making it even better.

The bottom line is, you have to have this jumper issue taken care of in order to use any performance chip in that particular vehicle, and it's simple to do. Do what Superchips is telling you and let them take care of it is our advice.

Octane boosters are not going to take 87 octane all the way up to premium for anywhere near the small difference between 87 & premium at the pump, which averages 20 cents a gallon. You really don't want to use octane booster to bring 87 up to premium anyway, as in addition to the improper fuel formulation that usually results and the pink to purple deposits & residue left behind on spark plugs & O2 sensors, you'd also have to use an awful lot of octane booster to get 87 octane up to at least 91 octane. Despite what any of their labels say, you'll spend far more for octane booster to try bringing 87 octane regular gas up to par than just buying the required premium gas.

There are no shortcuts on this deal I'm afraid, using the required good quality premium fuel is the only way you'll get proper performance from the Superchip.

Hang in there, as gas prices are on their way back down, oil is well under $30 a bbl. now, so in just a coupla-few weeks we'll all be seeing gas prices on their way back down again.

Yeah, and that's usually what the guys affected by this have basically said, that it could only happen to them. It tends to make us think that Murphy's Law is in full effect.

It's not a hard thing to do, and you'll be happy once it's done.

The background on this, just *very* briefly, is that Ford used a couple diufferent manufacturers for the PCB's (printed circuit boards) in the early to middle part of that model year, and on a few of them the jumpers that control the enable/disable state of the J3 connector were left open. This affects a few late '98 Expy's, a few early to mid-'99 F-150's, and a few Rangers. The cure is to simply finish the factory's job, by dropping a dot of solder to close each affected jumper. That needs to be done by someone that is *experienced* in soldering on PCB's, as you have to use low heat & be careful, etc.

It's easy to take care of, so you should be up & running with your Superchip pretty quickly, & good luck!
