Emissions Testing

Mike,

Forgot to ask you if the Micro Tuner will effect the Emissions Testing that is done in a lot of states, including the Atlanta, Ga., area?

On the newer vehicles, they plug into the computer port for the test.

Thanks.

I went through that emissions testing in Texas last December... after the tuner install. No problems at all.

Hi Dave,

There are many posts here with emission testing numbers, the actual output from the tailpipe with the Superchips tuning installed, etc. And many posts about the plug-in emissions tests that many areas of the country have been implementing for some time now, etc. Using the search feature is by far the quickest & best way to check to see if your question has already been asked & answered, that way you don't have to wait on me for an answer to basic questions. Just FYI so you can find things quicker...........

No, it has no effect on any emissions testing in any city, county, state, etc, anywhere in any of the 50 states. These are 50-state CARB & EPA approved, and that information is right there in the box for every Micro Tuner.

Many places are now going to that stupid plug-in test for emissions, which is an incomplete and IMHO a poor method. All they are doing is scanning for emissions-related error codes, they aren't even sniffing the tailpipe to see what's *really* coming out the tailpipe, which is a shame. I'm a bit of a fanatic about clean air, as we all need to breathe and which *can* be had and still make big power.

With this new "testing" method, as long as you don't have a check engine light (SES, service engine soon, etc.) on the dash, you're going to pass, basically, regardless of what's spewing out the pipes (unless there is obvious visible emission). They're assuming the OBD-II system works well enough so that if a vehicle was out of emissions range, it will throw some kind of a code for them to see by scanning thru the OBD-II port, but that's just not always the case. We've seen cases where people do dumb things like stripping off the catalytic converters (very bad move), which should immediately throw a hard code from the downstream O2 sensors on any 1996 & newer vehicle, not cause any code at all. Now that particular example is relatively rare overall, but we have had even people who had to drive without cats due to having to replace bad existing cats & waiting for parts, service appointment for installaiton, etc., people who were doing everything reasonable to comply as quickly as possible, run without functioning cats & not get a code. Sometimes they do, and sometimes they don't, it doesn't always work properly. So they should sniff test as well as scan, IMHO. But that's just my personal rant..........

The bottom line is, you have nothing to worry about with the Micro Tuner, it's 50-state emissions certified and isn't going to cause any emissions-related OBD-II DTC's.

In fact, you'll be putting out a little bit *less* emissions with the Superchips tuning in place. This has been reported many times here, many people have posted their before & after results in actual sniff tests with this tuning installed, and it's virtuallys always cleaner with the Superchips tuning.
