Ive heard that using dishwashing detergent soap to wash your ride will fade/mess up the paint? Is this true or does anybody know anything about this?

 

It is harsh stuff for your vehicle. Eventually after repeated use it will begin to dry and fade out trim and rubber. You can use it once or twice to remove any previous layers of wax or polishes. But don't push it, a quality car soap wash with a follow-up clay session can be just as effective.

 

Even used just once, dish soap WILL strip your paint of any protection. So unless you plan on a full detail right after, stick with a good car wash soap.

 

Yea it is hard on the plastics and rubbers. Does nothing for your wax...it strips everything off. It's worth spending the money on the car wash soaps, easier on your finish

 

Also keep in mind that most dish soaps contain a very mild abbrasive. If you put a drop of dish soap on your finger then begin rubbing your fingers together you'll know what I mean. Also dish soaps are degreasers by design so it'll strip some clearcoat if used in high concentration. Not recommended at all.

 

Your clear will fail after repeated use, then your only option is a new paint job

 

What these guys have noted is exactly the case... plus, let's keep in mind that your paint actually has essential oils and such that are in the mix to keep the finish shiny, clear (non-opaque) and from cracking.

Repeated usage of a 'Dawn' chemical on the vehicle is DEFINITELY not recommended.

Also, please keep in mind that one CAN cause a harsh situation with a regular car wash detergent.... to avoid this, be certain to utilize the correct dilution rates. For example, Meguiar's Hyper Wash is an astounding 400:1 ratio. One can only imagine if you were to crack open the bottle and plop some in to your bucket without measuring or metering it...

Dish soap is not quit as harsh as these guys make it out to be. but in some cases a very easy way to remove and strip old wax. When your done just do a good detail and wax job.

Dish soap has a much better place on the interior carpet. I works wonders and will remove grease oil and other crap that is down there. It will also leave a nice smell. I have used dish soap on my 02 Denali XL sense the day I bought it (carpet that is). Helps me keep it looking new even with three kids stomping around in it.

 

My father has used dish washing soap on all of our vehicles (except for mine) since new. Our oldest, being a 1997 Jeep has a few paint problems on the roof (peeling, typical Chrysler/Dodge *****). Everything else (1998 Ford Ranger, 2005 Dakota) looks just fine. No paint issues whatsoever, aside from the lack of wax. What the soap will do is strip all of your wax (protection) off and not leave it looking as good as it can. It hasn't caused clearcoat problems on any of our vehicles... Jeep included. That has a basecoat problem on the roof.

 

Not recommended on the body but I have read it its great for removing grime from chrome wheels.

 

I usually just wash my truck with alot of water and soft cloth rinsing it out frequently. Ive heard that dish detergent isnt good to use. Ive also see people use laundry detergent too, not too sure what that will do to your paint but I aint using it.

 

i use it twice a year to remove the wax or so im told

 

I used dishwashing soap (DAWN) on a RED 1995 OLDS for 7 years.......NEVER waxed!........ ONLY DAWN!

NEVER had a paint "issue"......never had a breakdown of "Clearcoat".....
the car ALWAYS looked exceptionally clean, I used to get compliments all the time about how beautiful that RED car was.......

Now, having said that, all future vehicles were waxed (MOST with ZAINO) every 6 months or so..........

So, personally, on that OLDS, DISHWASHING SOAP did no damage to the paint, dishwashing soap always cleaned the paint extremely well.......

I see nothing wrong with dishwashing soap.

 

Dawn is all I use for pre-polish because I like the way it strips, but I use Meg's Gold Class the rest of the time just in case. It works great, too....

 

I can't imagine just plopping Hyper Wash into a bucket like that haha
