I Need Everybody's help with this Detail
 

I'm thinking about buying the car below. The car has the 76 original paint on it and its very oxidated. What can I use to get it back in tip top shape without painting the whole car over. I would love to stay with Megs products for now. Also will I need a DA or will a DA make this job easier. Will the engine parts be able to stand up to APC+ and HD

Now that I looked at the pics again. I think this thing will benefit from a paint job, unless you guys think that some products will bring this back

Have you seen the car in person? It looks like it has a vinyl top.
I'd hit it with some white or blue clay, then some Color-X, topped with some NXT. That should work wonders on the single stage paint.

Exactly What Zaairman said. I would heavily suggest getting blue clay rather than white since it is a bit more aggressive. If you have felt it in person and it is really oxidized get some aggressive red clay. You will be amazed at what color x can do in bringing back SS paint. I used some on an old 74 dodge van and the results were amazing. I would apply 2 coats of NXT to ensure that the entire car is protected in every spot since it seems that it hasn't had much care.

As for the vinyl top I am extremely experienced however I would try ordering some M39 Heavy Duty Vinyl Cleaner and follow it with some M-40 Vinyl & Rubber Cleaner/Conditioner.

If it is a canvas top try using some M71 Canvas Cleaner followed by M 72 Canvas protectant. (they are marine products but I don't think it makes a difference. Canvas is Canvas)

I would also suggest getting some NXT All Metal Polysh and hit up those wheels to make them really pop.

Megs makes color x correct? How should I apply it (hand or DA)
and as far as the DA goes, how does SS paint hold up when using a DA.

Can someone lay out some steps I should take

Is ColorX aggressive enough to remove any clay haze you might get with the aggressive clay? Or since the car is that oxidized, would there even be any clay haze?

Edit: Yes Meguiar's makes ColorX and it's a GREEEEAAAAATTTT product. You can use it by hand, it'll take a LOT longer doing it by hand than a DA, but that's to be expected.

Yes, Megs makes Color X. I'd apply it by hand. If you really want to make it pop try using Speed Glaze #80 with a DA and a polishing pad. SS paint is pretty easy to work with using a DA. But, seeing as how that paint is 30+ years old, I'd hit it by hand first then go to the machines.

Zaairman can you lay out some steps for me or correct my steps. This is what I'm thinking about doing

Clay
Megs Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner
Color X
NXT 2.0
#26 (12 hours after NXT2.0 has cured)

What do you think about these steps. I dont mind buying new products but I do have these products at home as we type.

Your procedure is correct, however I don't believe that the DC paint cleaner is necessary and I'm pretty sure you can't get a haze from clay.

ok cool. I take it that Color X and DC paint cleaner are similar and that's why its not needed.

If you want to, go ahead and do the DC and Color X. Surely can't hurt any and I'm sure the paint will need all the help that it can get.

over 30 years old and red....it will be a tough one. i doubt that any shine you get out of it will last very long.

yes andrewc did do a 74 van with some good results, however white is alot more forgiving than the color red....another thing to point out, the van that was done is all verticle sides (the van only has the hood which is very small..we did not get shots of the roof), this impala/caprice is all flat surfaces, the hood and trunk is what catches all of the sun, and where water sets on and dries/bakes into the paint...

I dont have it yet. I'm trying to buy it. I will let you know what happens by the end of the week.

I just have to ask what is the interest in that car?
