Meguiar's Scratch X

I cannot find Meguiar's #9 but I saw Meguiar's Scratch X can i use it insted of the #9? I did a search and could not find an answer. Sorry if this was discussed before.

I think I'll let RP chime in, but if memory serves me right, Scratch-X is the consumer product line that works very similar to a #9 or #83.

Tony's correct.

You may not want to do the entire vehicle with scratch-x as it is designed to deal with more 'localized' scratches. Did you see anything on the shelves called 'COLOR-X'? If so, that may be the product you should utilize rather than Scratch-X.

Both are great products but, the abrasives in Scratch-X are a bit more powerful than Color-X's cleaners.

Oh yes... I almost forgot...

If you go the SCRATCH-X route, you will have to finish your work by utilizing a quality wax (like #26, NXT or several others) as the SX product offers NO protection and designed to deal specifically with surface defects below the painted surface.

Color-X is an 'all-in-one' type of product and can be used in one step versus multiples.

Thanks for the replys

I have a 2000 Expo and a 1995 Windstar that need detailing. I want to do more than the usual wash and wax. Here is what I would like to do:

1. Wash with quality car wash,
2. clay each vehicle - surface not smooth,
3. apply meguiars swirl remover #9,
4. apply meguiars polish #7,
5. apply meguiars NXT wax,
6. and if needed, meguiars #26.

I have everything except the #9. I have seen the color-x and can buy that locally. Will the color-x work in my application? Thanks for all your help :bows:.

Jeff:

That sounds like the same steps and products I used last week on my truck and it came out looking great! The Clay is what really is the trick to taking out the imperfections and road crud. That step is the real important one in my opinion.

Jeff,

It will work but, not as a replacement for your #9 step in your laid out procedure (which is a very good one might I add). If you are to utilize the Color-X, you'd probably want to remove the #7 as it would be a generally useless step post Color-X.

So, if you go the C-X route:

1. Wash
2. Clay
3. Color-X
4. NXT (2 coats recommended but optional)
5. #26 (optional)

I think you'll be pleased with those results but, having not seen your finish, it's hard to say for sure that Color-X will deal with all of your imperfections (or, for that case, if #9 would work either).

Just in case, you can apply multiple coats of C-X if you need to work harder on certain areas.

Glad to have helped but I'm far from 'genius' status.

Just as a suggestion prior to you ordering.... PepBoys, Autozone, and Kragen all typically have #9 on the shelf. Also, you may try a local NAPA or similar. (just trying to save you the hassle...)

G'luck!
