PM digitalmarket. He is very knowledgeable on the subject. I'm sure he could give you recommondations. I can tell you the little that I know. They can be hard wired into your fuse box. or plugged into a 12 volt receptacle. (cigarette lighter). As far as discrete , There are units that are hidden from view, mounted remotely . Like under the bumpers of the vehicle or in the grille. They have some kind alert device in the cab. but nothing in plain sight on the dash. Escorts line of detectors are descent and be had on ebay at a dicounted price.

YES, absolutely, and every cop car has one in areas where detectors are illegal, such as in canada. I got nailed by a radar detector-detector in ontario 18 years ago!! So, it's nothing new.

Try taking one suctioned to your windshield across the Detroit/Windsor Bridge. Confiscated.

I just bought a new Cobra w/touchscreen. GPS capable. Lifetime subscription to Aura, also. (came with)

Has a GPS dongle that plugs into your USB port for updating the locations of known speed traps, traffic light camera's and stationary radars.

Pretty cool. Hundreds less than a Valentine and reading 82 reviews only a couple of peeps seemed dissatisfied.

Some of the reviews are from prior Valentine owners and say it's comparable.

Lots more reviews on Amazon. 15$ cheaper, also.

For you Canadians, there is a setting which turns off all radar detection circuitry when your engine's rpm's drop to a certain rpm which is set by the user. (That's for when the RCP has you pulled over and you don't want your radar detector, detected!)

Since radar detectors are legal here (California), and as a traffic officer who uses both radar and Laser for speed enforcement, I don't see how people benefit from the detector.

I use the hold button until I have the target vehicle in view, by the time your detector alerts you I already got your speed. If your detector alerts you when my radar signal reflects from your vehicle, I have already measured your speed. Using Laser I can target the front bumper, license plate, headlamp and get an instant speed.

I just don't really see that most people benefit from the detectors. I have stopped people for speeding and during the traffic stop my vehicle mounted radar was running and their dash mounted detector wasn't even going off.

BTW, California has some pretty tough laws about police use of radar/laser, including a requirement to visually estimate the speed to ensure the radar speed isn't off (like a car going 30 and radar speed of 60), plus other requirements.

I use an Escort 8500 and it works great for radar and laser, Ive caught them miles before I could even see them. As for power most plug into your cigarette lighter. Or you could always hard wire them but I like being able to swap it into which ever vehicle I am driving. I never leave home without it! If it saves your from just one ticket, it pretty much paid for itself.

Some have the option to NOT alert when the engine is turning below a certain (user desired) rpm. At idle, mine doesn't alert.

Mine also alerts me to red light camera's, school zones, construction zones, etc. thru the GPS module.

Not every user breaks the law, it just has that appearance.
