Adding 09 backup camera & emblem on 04-08

3 Attachment(s)
Ok guys well a few have asked and I finally finished the install. Im putting it here cause I do not know if its good enough for the How To's. This is not an exact science but its the way I did it. So play at your own risk.

This is the 09 emblem and backup camera add on to a 04-08 tailgate. My work is on my 06 but I assume the other years are the same. The pictures are from a camera phone and (yes it has some crazy line in each picture) because I broke my camera. Sorry:(

First remove the original emblem. The best way is to use a heat gun and melting the double sided tape. There are two holes underneath were pins fit in but nothing is screwed or bolted. So once its heated good use fishing string and run it from one side to the other. You will hit the two pins so just work around them. Or you can do what I did but I would not recommend it:

Thanks to Buck Knives test knife:thumbsup:

I used the piece of cardboard to protect against scratches and slid the knife straight up from the bottom and after a little prying it comes right off.
Attachment 35848
This is what you will be left with.

Next, you will have to do a little cutting to make the camera assembly fit and the emblem sit flush. I am old school and used sheet metal cutters and a metal file to create my opening (and I don't have any other tools to cut metal:D). Once you have the opening it should look something like this. Some of you on here can probably make a prettier hole.

Next post will be wiring.

I cut the harness off here.

Attachment 35851

With the harness facing you like this. Use this number order

Attachment 35852
The coloring is a little different because I think this is an 08.
The harness I have is
1- red/ 12v + voltage
2- black/ shield I did not use
3- blue/ not used I think for audio
4- white/ video +
5- green/ video -
6- black/ -ground

Run the #1 12v and #6 ground to wherever you want power from. I spliced into the reverse bulb so when it receives power the camera comes on.
With the video I used a yellow video cable and ran it too my head unit. When you cut open the video cable you will see a bare wire and a smaller covers wire. The bare wire is negative to wire it too #5 green video negative and the covered wire is spliced to #4 white video +. You will only need #1#6#4#5 wires.

TO fish the wiring through the tailgate is just dumb luck. I used and old antenna and wrapped the video, 12v and negative around it and ran it straight down from the hole in front of the inner steel beam going across the tailgate and there is a small hole on the bottom of the tailgate where they come out. From there I ran it across under the truck to my taillight and this is were I did the power splice.

So I have a 12v and ground wired to my reverse taillight a yellow video cable running down my chassis and into the truck behind my dash and into my head unit. I ran this female video connector because my clarion has a male on the other side. But both are wired up the same way.

Once that is all done I had to make the hole for the camera a little bit bigger at the bottom to make the camera barrell fit. But once that was done it fit nice and snug. Back on with some double sided tape and a little black RTV gasket sealant and its nice and cozy and ready to work.

Here is the finished product and one of it as seen on my screen.

The picture will probably be better if the wiring is soldered but I did not do that. Just basic splicing and electrical tape. I have probably missed some stuff so if I did just ask and Ill do my best to answer.

Looks great! Nice work.

blackedoutV6 07-12-2009 12:38 AM

very nice mod!

BMS 07-13-2009 09:31 PM

to remove the emblem, you can use fishing line to cut through the adhesive tape instead of prying. Nice mod. Thanks for the writeup.

JJDH 07-13-2009 10:20 PM

thenewbreed 08-04-2009 05:35 PM

I bought it from the classifieds on here. Ill try and find a part number.

Great job! Takes some real cajone's to cut and splice on your nice truck like that!! I'm betting a lot of folks will be making that mod now that you've done it!

When you cut the hole in the tailgate, did you prime or somehow coat the freshly cut area in some form or fashion? Seems like a prime cadidate to quickly begin to rust if you did not...

Yes its bare metal allright. I put a bead of the black silicon over the edge before I finished. Great point by the way.

back up camera and emblem for 06

where can I find one of the emblem/back up cameras for a decent price? I'm thrilled to know this can be done.

expedition4x4 03-29-2010 07:29 PM

thenewbreed can you measure the length and height of the emblem?? I've been thinking about doing this to the expy on the tailgate

F150 Backup

I am in the process of adding the emblem camera also, and was wondering if you know if I am going to use the backup camera, but also the 09' rearview mirror would I have to splice any wires still like the Video, power, etc??

Or will the harneses pretty much be plug and play?

OR will the video harness run straight to the screen, but i will have to find power, etc??

Any help from anyone would be great....

The 09 mirror should plug and play with the 09 camera, but you will probably have to splice into one of the sides to make the cable longer to reach.

Vigs07R 05-12-2010 05:36 PM

Awesome. I want to get either the new logo cam or handle cam for mine.

So there is no module that the harness would have to run into or anything?? i would basically just have to supply the mirror and camera with a reverse signal, power, and ground as well as just extend the wires??

Camera

Hey guys just thought i would update that i bought the camera and mirror combo Brand new for $220 on ebay. The sellers name is nailsandsales and they also have just the camera emblem for $130, but i made an offer on it for $100 and they accepted.

BrewScrew 09-11-2010 04:02 PM

Thanks I received my camera today and gonna install ASAP! This is gonna help a ton when I hook up the boat solo!!

1lohauler 10-30-2010 12:58 AM

Do you know the store name I searched nailsandsales and nothing came up? Thanks

COBRAMAN5.0 02-15-2011 08:56 PM

I bought a cheap flush mount and installed it in my lisence plate, most people wouldnt notice it at all and it has night vision led's

07HarleyDavidsn 09-28-2011 08:37 PM

If I had an aftermarket headunit, the backup camera would be on my truck already. Looks like I have to get the built-in screen review mirror in order for this to work.

powerz69 09-28-2011 11:19 PM

Thanks for this write-up. I got my emblem camera from the ebay seller listed above in the spring time. My wires were different colors but I found a diagram with my colors. After the install, I plugged my video out cable to my Edge CTS tuner. Works great. I never realized how much I used it till I took the CTS out to download some software and never put it back in.

ak_cowboy 09-28-2011 11:51 PM

^ Do you have a link with those colors? She seems to have some good deals on the Emblem camera/harness and I'm interested in adding this to my Pioneer headunit

powerz69 09-29-2011 12:11 AM

Yes,Yes I do!

I wanted to report that I followed these instructions with some slight deviations to install an emblem camera in my '04 Supercrew. I used a hole saw in my drill to create the hole for the camera in the tailgate. Since the bit is not made for cutting metal I kept it cool with a little bit of water and the hole was finished in no time. Also, the harness that I received with my camera had different color wires than mentioned in the tutorial. This is how my harness was laid out.

1. Gray = 12V
2. Black/Orange = Shield
3. White= not used
4. Brown = Video +
5. Brown/Yellow = Video -
6. Black/Green = Ground

I used standard RG-6 coax cable as my video cable with the Video + (brown) wire soldered to the inner copper wire in the RG6 and the Video - (Brown/Yellow) soldered to the outer woven wires. At the received end of the video cable I terminated the RG6 with an F connector and screwed on an RCA adapter to plug in to my Pioneer head unit. Finally, I used the Black and pink wire located under the driver's door sill as the reverse trigger to the head unit.

If anyone is looking for an emblem camera, I received mine on ebay from a seller named nailsandsales. She was very friendly and shipped the camera the day after I sent payment. She has the camera listed for $125.00, but she accepted my best offer of $100 plus shipping. Hope this is helpful to anyone else interested in installing this camera.

wyattboche 10-27-2011 02:05 PM
