How to swap outer door mirrors on 2004-2008 F150

I finally got really tired of looking at those unattractive manual mirrors that my F150 came with and picked up some of the factory mirrors from a Lariat edition F150. Changing out these mirrors is very easy and can be done in about an hour with hand tools.

***Installation steps may vary depending on the factory options that your truck came with***

I started out by removing the cover from the inner door handle bezel with a flathead screwdriver.

I then removed the 2 8mm bolts that hold the bezel to the door.

I then moved down to remove the window crank by prying up gently with a flathead screwdriver.

***Trucks equipped with power windows will need to remove the switches from the armrest pads***

After the crank handle cover is out of the way you will need a torx bit to remove the crank handle from the door.

I then moved over to the speaker cover. I would suggest using a door panel removal tool for this to prevent damage to the cover.

Then you will need to remove the door speaker and unhook the wiring.

After this is out of the way you can then move down to the bottom of the door and remove the 2 6mm bolts holding the bottom of the door panel on.

Now that everything is removed that is holding the door panel to the door you will need to pull UP and then outward and the door panel will be removed from the door. The door will still be connected by a cable that connects the inner door handle to the lock rod.

Now you can finally remove the mirror from the door. There are going to be 3 11mm nuts that are holding the mirror to the door.

Attachment 35728

After you remove the nuts you will have to wiggle the mirror out from the outside of the truck. On the top bolt there will be a “clip” that may require you to pull a little harder and jiggle around some more that is pictured here.

Now that the old mirrors are out you can go ahead and install the new mirrors! I opted to get the “caps” on mine painted before installation.

Installation will be the reverse of removal. The driver side and passenger side on my truck used the same steps. You should now be looking at your new, better looking mirrors!

Hope this has helped anyone that has been wanting to attempt this swap!

Very nice! A big improvement. I did mine a few months ago, and I couldn't be happier.

Thanks guys. I can't decide if I want to do PTM handles or not. Hopefully this will be my last sidetrack before dropping the truck. Pat found these mirrors for me for $100 so I couldn't pass them up. They have the turn signal lights on the bottom of them as well as being electric. Might have heat as well, but I'm not sure.

Where did you find them for $100?

He found a guy that had put towing mirrors on his and sold the truck so they were sitting in the garage.

What's TAC? Yeah I like the stealth bulbs. Might do that sometime.

TAC= technical article contributor and the bulbs are $3.99 each

Are the turn signals on your mirrors functional after the swap? Were they just plug and play or did you have to run any new wires?

BrizzleOrizzle 04-26-2009 09:23 AM

that looks 100% better.

wfburton159 04-26-2009 10:35 AM

That does look way better. The caps look really good. Nice mustang!

87fiveoh254 04-26-2009 12:07 PM

Thanks guys.

AceSC, My truck was all manual so I will have to go back later and wire them up to a switch to get them to work. They are purely cosmetic right now.
