I read they are related to pats so I guess I can't get a used one as a plug in play. Does a 2001 have to be flashed or programmed if I get one from another truck? What years are compatible ?

2001 should be PATS. Easily identified by having a large plastic base on your key.

I believe any PATS cluster is compatible with programming. 99-03 IIRC

I guess I have to do this also, I have 2000 lightning and the read out display goes in and out for no apparent reason.

I am attempting this on my 2004 F150. What's the trick to getting the gear shift position cable unhooked?

Fixed mine today

this has been an issue since my girlfriend acquired this truck from her father. Been driving me nuts. I was pretty quick at pulling the dash apart but then realized my soldering iron had gone missing.

I went to Harbor Freight and picked up a new one and had the job done in just over an hour.

Hope it lasts and does the trick. Thanks to the original post to walk me through the process!

2001 F150 Odometer intermittent issue

Hello, I know that this is an old post but the information was great. I have a 2001 F150 with the intermittent odometer issue. Took the speedometer out. The only thing is that I did not have to remove the headlight switch. Once I pulled the dash cover I could reach around and unplug it from behind. I took the circuit board to the shop that I use to repair my vintage stereo equipment. He put his magnifying goggles on and agreed that the solders had issues. Took him 30 seconds to redo all 9 solders for no charge. I did try to protect the plastic cover on the steering column when reinstalling but still did scratch it a little. It has been a month now and still working great. Thanks for such a great post.

After the re-solder of the 9 defective ones.

Now working.
