if it started then you had the polarity right. a solenoid is like a rod in a magnet. activate (or deactivate) the magnet and the rod pushes out.

do you know for sure it was the solenoid smelling? describe the smell, seriously.

There should be 3 terminals on the Solenoid. Two larger ones and one small one. The small one is for the relay switch on the firewall. The top large one is for the positive battery terminal and the bottom one is for the starter motor. The battery ground goes on the stud that is used to mount the starter to the engine.

Regards

Edit: If you installed the Neg battery to the top terminal you shorted the positive feed to the solenoid from the relay switch on the firewall. You may have melted the wire from the firewall when you tried to start it.

On the 2000 F-150 there 5 wires going to the starter area. A fat red, a skinny red, a fat black, a skinny black and a short starter motor wire coming out of the starter. The fat black goes to the starter bolt stud. The small black goes to the body ground on the frame. The fat red goes to the top terminal on the solenoid, farthest from the starter. The skinny red goes to the small terminal on the solenoid. The starter motor wire goes to the bottom terminal on the solenoid, closest to the starter .

So again I ask; what wires did you connect and what did you connect them to?

Regards

That would be the Starter "Relay" on the firewall. - The Starter "Solenoid" piggy backs the starter (it's directly on top of it).

Check fuse # 32 in PBD under the hood. It's a little black fuse, I think there's only two of those in their - Maybe it burned up ?
