Question of the Week: Would you want a manual transmission in your 2015 F150?
Our newest Question of the Week wants to know if you would prefer your ideal 2015 Ford F150 pickup with a manual transmission and, if so, which engine would you like to see paired to that manual gearbox?
I prefer a manual in my car and have owned nothing but manuals for the last 16 years but I think in a truck, especially a new truck, I'd go auto.
Now, go back 20 years and I'd say give me the manual but back then the auto left a lot to be desired.

There already is a full manual mode on the automatic transmission. There is no need for a clutch, and it provides full control. It is available on the 2015 XL as a standard feature now!
IF I were to buy one, gladly!! on the 5.0, as I wouldn't consider another powerplant if I was paid to. and I'd be willing to pay a LOT extra for the manual.

Rest assured, if there was money to be made by doing it, Ford would be doing it. There isn't, so they aren't.
I'd never ever ever have an auto in a Mustang, and I'd consider it if it were offered in a 150, but I'd still probably opt for the auto. I would take a 6 speed Cummins though. Just depends on every application.
The old V6 Mazda-sourced manuals that couldn't handle more than 13 HP before blowing up sucked and weren't fun to drive, so that's not a good comparison either.

the auto is supposed to be the superior performer in these times. autos from years ago were sluggish and only good for those who didn't want to go to the trouble to change a gear. nowadays they are far improved with extra gears, lightning quick shifts, stronger build, et cetera. much more competitive, and many will contend far superior. many now days prefer an auto for heavy hauling and towing.
they remain popular in sports cars as the only real purpose of sports cars is being fun to drive for those who like them, those people usually wand a fun manual. an auto will usually outperform them in racing now.
I have heard several people still scoff at auto trucks, these are experienced manual drivers who are very skillful with them. I myself still need practice but I love manuals. I myself think, for truck purposes, a strong manual can still outdo or at least equal a modern auto with a skilled driver.
that said, be it laziness, disability, inferiority real or perceived, a mixture thereof, or any other reason, the manual is not coming back, because ford thinks no one wants them. I'll miss them, but such as it is.
It's 2014, manual transmissions have no usefulness anymore. The manually trannys they put in F150's from roughly 1989 to 2008 were complete junk. The older Borg-Warner T-18 and T-19's were great, but all the mazda stuff they started using in the 80's is crap.
Even big rigs mostly use automatics now...
I used to like them, and they were fun when I was a kid, but I could not imagine having to commute with one. And pulling a boat out of the water with one, please...
